View Full Version : Watch crew blind? Using SH3C + GW mod

Hi,
After being away from SH3 for months I descided to install again and try some mods.
Problem as title says is that my watch crew is almost blind. So far I havent gotten a ship spotted message on a ship that was more than 4000m away, and thats in daylight with completely clear weather. If I by chance is looking around myself I can spot the smoke at twice that distance, but the crew just dont see them.
This problem creates a lot of other problems. If Im at TC I often end up at less than 2000m when my watch crew allert me, and if this is a DD then...well you know. I've actually had DDs spot me way before I could see them and having a DD coming straight at you at 34kt doesnt leave much time to react. Think the worst case I had was a DD that had shot my boat half to death in TC before my crew allerted me and the TC dropped to 1.
Is this normal using GW 1.1a or SH3 Commander?
The night time range is much better, but still dangerous to use TC. Daytime detection is just crazy for ships.
Hope someone can tell me whats going on and if its supposed to be like this.

My crew spot sometimes a ship from 12000 range(even for me with binoculars) just a smoke in the horizon....
but sometimes they spotted around 8000 range, and shorter, it's depend...
Be sure you have a Watch officer that have qualify in watch, and a mate also a qualify with a watch(star)...

Usually only happens to me in Windy/Stormy weather (and then only twice so far).
The last time I came out of TC with a DD about 100m off my stern. Managed to Crash Dive without dying, though took a few rounds and a ram in the process.

Watch crew compartment is at max. Officer and Petty officer with watchman qualification.
It also bugs me that the officer is not going back up after I have surfaced, only the others do.

Hello
it has happened to me as well but not so often. I guess as the watch crew gets more experience they get better.

@Gazer75
I have the same problem when playing TGW1.1a. My watchman, who is qualified, has not reported "ship spotted" for the entire 15 days my patrol has taken and I haven't even sunk 1 ship.
I don't need any crew on the bridge at night because for the 15 days, my nights are as black as the "Not so long ago ..." screen is. So night attacks are out for me. Now this is my first patrol in Sept 1939 in a VIIB.
Using SH3 (heavily modded) I have no problems as mentioned above and have played over 50 missions
@Nightcrawler
You are a very lucky man to have your watch officer on the bridge to spot a ship at 12000, let alone 8000. Your watch officer must have binoculars implanted in his eyeballs
I think all my crew (in using TGW) are all named Bernard.

If I'm not mistaken there were 4 options with GW concerning meters to see and darkness at night. I chose the longest meters to see and the lightest offered in the download. My watch see ships 15000m off the conning tower. Might want to reinstall with one of these options.

Can I reinstall even though I haven't finished my first mission?
BTW, what did you check when you installed?

Make sure you are in port upon re-install. If I remember correctly, I installed the most meters I could see and used light. There was I believe 4 options. Load the longest sight and the lightest mod available. See how she goes. Like I said, my guys are like eagle eye GI Joe. 15000m and they see ships!

I reinstalled TGW1.1a overtop of the other one and my second patrol is 1919 hrs and I still can't see a darn thing except the lights in the harbour. I can barely make out the watchman on the bridge. I checked atmosphere 16km light, Da Boot movie and remove friendly mines.

All I can recommend at this point is brigtening you monitor. There was another thread concerning this but I do not know the outcome of that thread.:cry:

I'm using GW1.1a, the 16km Atmosphere mod (light) and Drifters Longer repair time mods. In good weather my lookouts spot at 12 to 15 thousand meters consistantly. Nighttime I get 6 to 8 thousand meters spottings.
It's my hydrophone operator is is deaf most of the time. He'll hear ships at long range sometimes but can't pick up a ship 500 meters away, go figure.

Can't one just edit a .cfg file with a text editor and change the Watch's sight range that way? That would be easier than reinstalling.

I could not find anything relating to Watch's sight range, but I did find "Visual Sensors" Visual range 1.4; .05 Visual Fog 1; 0.85 Light 1.6; 1.5 Now if this is what you are referring to I have no idea what to change it to.
Also, how would this affect my ability to see at night. At prsent clear skies, no rain, no fog, 5 wind.
