Default Sea Lance

Was just watching Captain Jive Turkey's live stream and I noticed that he had a Sea Lance as an available weapon for the 688. Is that a mod he is running or is it part of the game now?

I believe it's a mod. I haven't seen it in the stock game, nor would I expect it because it was a cancelled project.

In a similar vein, can anyone throw in a mod for Subroc/Asroc type weapon? Even a plain conventional non-nuclear depth bomb could be fun?

Default Nuclear weapons

Even adding some low kiloton yield weapons would be interesting. For example, the Soviets had a wide range of tactical weapons to include nuclear warheads on some 55cm and 65cm torpedoes, nuclear depth bombs carried by TU-142, Ka-25, Be-12, Yak-36, etc., not to mention the FROG-7 on the Minsk and Kiev class cruisers, and Shkval rocket torpedo (not even considering nuc whds on ASM's, SAM's, SSM's, and sub launched missiles).
Even if every system was modded with a low yield 5 kt warhead, it would be somewhat of a challenge to detect, close, plan attack, and escape (well, except for SUBROC type weapons, you're pretty much screwed).

Yours, &c.

The Bedford Incident anyone?

I don't think we need to go down every nuclear avenue, however I do agree a Mk 45 ASTOR and SUBROC would be nice. Still I can see why the devs made their decision not to feature these weapons. Giving nukes to the AI would be quite challenging because as is often the case (and in many cases with players too) they will just automatically reach for their most powerful weapon, with many mushroom clouds to ensue.

Still though, the topic of tactical nuclear weapons, as encountered on an isolate submarine is a very interesting topic to think about, especially when you put it into context of the Soviet procedures during the Cuban Missile Crisis (basically "We're going to give you this nuclear torpedo, use it if you think you have to.")

Interesting dilemma when you think about the circumstances that these things would come into use. As far as I understand with SUBROC, it was primarily conceived of as the ultimate anti-boomer weapon. You pick one up who's getting ready to launch his missiles or even worse has already started, don't worry about how many long its going to take for a fish to get there, you can fire up a SUBROC and drop 5 kilotons on his head in about 2 minutes.

The Soviet units already have SSN-14/15/16 in game. would only need ASROC if they introducing a Soviet campaign.

I would like a non-nuclear variant of the Subroc to fire, I like the idea of depth charging people!

There was talk of making a variant which would carry a Mk 44 (or maybe later 46) torpedo but this was scrapped due to budget reductions because of the Vietnam war. I have my doubts that SUBROC would be accurate enough to actually accomplish anything with a conventional depth charge. Eventually though the idea of a conventional SUBROC morphed into what became Sea Lance, which never made it out of the cold-war.

IIRC American SubRoc was nuclear, and was not in active service in 80's. I'd love to make you guys one, but it would detract from the realism.

It stuck around until the late 80s with the Permit class. SUBROC was incompatible with the newer Mk 117 digital fire-control system so the number of boats that could carry it became fewer and fewer as the early 688s and Sturgeons were upgraded. The Mk 117 was required to be able to use Tomahawk and while they didn't fulfill the same missions, it was considered a worthwhile trade to shelve SUBROC for Tomahawk.
