Default 76000 Tonne Steamer Sunk by U-69

Anybody seen this before?

19-7-1941 Grid DT95 Sunk British 76000 tonne steamer 1042 hours.

Out of interest was there a 76000 Ton steamer sunk around this date historically?

According to uboat.net, this was the only merchant vessel sunk at that time in that location:

Default Very mysterious

Don't know what MODs you may be using, but with GWX3/MFM 3.2 and Wilhemshafen,St Naz,Schluese and xtra ships, I don't see any 76000ton steamers at all; even looking for something that size in the SEA folders.

The closest possibilities (in the game and in real life) would appear to be the liners "Normandie", "Queen Mary" and "Queen Elizabeth".

Also in real life, the largest steamer sunk by any U-Boat was the "Empress of Britain"; 42,348GRT.

Ahhhh...7600tons...there are probably more than one of that size in the game...

Ah ha...now it makes more sense. It's an "immersion message"...not a Captain's Log/KTB entry. Probably based on a "real world" message from U-69 to BdU claiming a sinking. It's likely this ship doesn't exist in the game's SEA folders. The closest thing like it that might be scripted to appear in that Grid square (if there is anything like that) would probably be one of the three liners that I mentioned. Nothing else comes close to that size.

I play using GWX Gold. I will upload a photograph tomorrow but I guess it's an extra 0 inserted by the mod on the report by accident.

I have it come up 3 times (had 3 crashes to desktop prior to saving) so it's defiantly in the script.

If you know the class of the ship, look in data/sea/(ship class here)/cfg under displacement. That is where the report gets the tonnage from. Let us know if you find it.

Here we go folks.

Only says its a steamer but I shall take a look and see what I can find.

Edit - I afraid I can't find the ship in question. I've looked in English names and can see a NPL_KDF=KDF Steamer but I can't find the file.

Thank you for the information on the Empress of Britain. I found it interesting reading that it was bombed and then hunted by the BDU. I found it surprising that when the first torpedo hit the destroyers protecting the EOB being tugged thought it was an internal explosion from a fire.

On July 19, 1941, U-69 was between patrols. Just three weeks earlier, however, she did indeed sink a ship in the 7,600 tons range:

Thank you Sailor Steve. It would appear that the ship sank was the ship Empire Ability at 7600 tonne.

Oh it was a radio message. Look in data/Campaigns/Campaign/messages_en.txt (opens with notepad) Look for the date 19410719, and it will be there. You can change it to what it should be using notepad and save it.

Is the EOB in the game, can we go to those grid coordinates and sink her, or is it just radio messages?

The radio message he posted is one for immersion purposes only, and also refers to a 7600 ton steamer, not the Empress of Britain. The tonnage listed was a mistake in the messages_en.txt file. I found it in my file also and corrected it in mine.
