Still find I am unable to edit posts on previous pages of this thread; I got the P-51 pilot's name conflated with another I've been studying... this should read Lt. Alden P. Rigby, not Capt. William Whisner.

I think it's finished... Lt Alden Rigby vanquishes a foe during the infamous attack of 1st January 1945 above Airfield Y-29

Here's the improved version; according to the pilot's own account, they were taking off without tanks for that patrol... then the attack came in.

This should clarify matters

On January 1, 1945, Asch airfield (Y-29) was the site of a major aerial battle during the Luftwaffe's Operation Bodenplatte. The FW-190's and Bf-109's of JG-11 arrived at Asch just as the 487th FS of the 352nd FG were rolling down the runway, the ensuing battle came to be known as the Legend of Y-29. The pilots of the 487th Fighter Squadron who took off did so under fire and in the face of overwhelming odds. The 487th scored 23 kills while suffering only 2 damaged aircraft in the face of 3:1 odds. This is, as you'll realise by now, the very roughest planning out of a new painting; an impressionistic mess at the moment... perhaps



Even though I've chosen to show the bombers being overhauled by the Messerscmitts from behind, by this stage of the war the Germans usually came at them head-on. I also took some photos to show this method of attack, but they'll probably get used at a later date.

Like it, even early stages look very promising mate. This did remind me of something I see recently. Possibly some ideas too? Take a peek, interesting story;

Funny you should come up with the Franz Stigler encounter, Fubes... when I was setting up the models to compose this painting, I took a few additional ones to help me produce my own depiction of that story later (see below) even though it's been painted several times already, I know.



Of course the model photography is for composition only... aircraft markings, armament etc, have to be changed. If I ever got around to painting it then I was planning to call it "The Guardian" or something like that.
