Ant Smith is a friend of mine who was a moderator at Ubisoft but had no say in a picture competition that I won in July 2008.

The shot in question, the one you posted, was mine entitled Baltic Winter.

5th Voyage, Jan/Feb 1940, Kiel_1 -> DH46 Partol via Skagerak/Rockall bank but two convoys needed all my torps so im heading for Ferrol for supply.

Leaving Kiel, 200km North i meet a small german convoy with koeln destroyer and two large tankers bound for Kiel:

2cnd convoy (got no pictuers from the first):

Im using the "Otto Kretschmer" tactics by entering the convoy from the front on silent running, machines off by 30-40 m and then periscope depth between the lines...very effective.

On the way to spain, nice day on IXB bridge:

IXB deckgun was the last thing he saw :

Totall sunk: ~58000 BRT.

German minelayer......

BUT KALEUN KNOWS....there is only ONE (big) good reason to visit Brest in 1940......mighty STRASBOURG :

A vessel of ~30000 BRT just laying there waiting to be sunk by Kriegsmarine!

BUT...i was low on zigares and not able to sink that massive vessel....from 5 torps fired...only 2~3 hit....the damn electronic torps just exploded somewhere in the sea or on the beach (couldnt see what exactly was happeing just heared a explosion)...

I marked here spot on map for my return after i got some fresh spanish zigares, because of the absolute bad weather i took me 17 hours to find here...i expected here somewhere in the south of Brest...

So...back to Spain:

Still ~30000 BRT sunk (i wasted all my torps on small freighters because could not use deckgun...)

Jim, mate; Excellent Tirpitz attack pics You really got it correct!
A little of topic (forgive me =): In Tirpitz`final battle, when she ended her days outside Tromsø, the bombs used by the allies really did pack a punch, as you can see on the pic below. On the first one we can see a crater from an off target bomb, with the capsized Tirpitz in the background. On the second, we can see how the craters look today (Nice swimmingpool :P ). The wreck of Tirpitz was sold to the "Høvding" salvage and scrapping company after the war, and they chopped her up for scrap metal. On the last picture you can see the only visible remains after this operation: A ramp they used as a working platform during the scrapping (I often use this ramp as a resting spot when i`m kayaking in that area). But the seafloor is still full of stuff from the ship, and when the tide is out you can see a lot gliding past you under the kayak.
Well, did not mean to hijack the thread, just thought it could be an interesting read after seeing Jim`s wonderful shots .

Was able to sink mighty Strasbourg but on the way out of Brest i was to careless and surfaced to sink 3 Crab Cutters which where caught on the net protecting the harbour entrace....planes supriced me i couldnt go on alarm diving because water level was to low, when trying to maneveur from the planes bombs and machine guns i was hiting the subnet myself on AK ().....got some major damages and the plane killd one flakguner with machine gun...boat made water in the torpedo room...i was able to escape and go on persicope depth but the plane drobs some waterbombs on me damaging the turret and flak gun....i was able to escape and surfaced after ~2hours to repair but planes arrived again attacking me i went on 60 meters by alarm diving but after 20min i ran aground because the water was only 52 meter deep..... Lot of good men died and boat was on 62% but the water incoming was not repairable and boat was dead....Many planes over Brest Feb 1940.

Yes...extended challange earns the name...

So much for the story, here the pics:

Totall sunk: Strasbourg ~31000 BRT, Large Motor Steamer ~ 8000BRT, Myself...
