Default Strange Horizon Flickering

Hello Kaleuns,

I wanted to get insight, if possible, into this potential problem.

I thought a mod might be causing it, but I have removed everything, and now all I have installed is SH3 commander and GWX 3.0 Gold

It isn't a constant flickering. If I hold the periscope or free camera still, I don't really see it, but the second I start to turn left or right I see these tiny horizontal slivers of white (just for a split second) flickering all the way off at the horizon.

It does not seem right and it is quite immersion breaking.

Thank you for your insights in advance shipmates!

Yup, I see it sometimes, too.

I assumed that it was far-off lightning effects.

I'm not entirely sure if what I have experienced in the past is what you're experiencing here, but from what I know, enabling MSAA through your video driver causes this kind of stuff.

I'm using an Nvidia card, and through Nvidia Inspector, I changed the "Antialiasing Compatability" mode to 0x20000000 for Silent Hunter III. This alone has essentially fixed all of the strange artifacts and lighting glitches I was getting.

Not sure if this will help, or if you're even using some form of Antialiasing in your game, but if you are, try it out. Hopefully AMD cards have some sort of similar function in their drivers, but I wouldn't know

Thank you for the advice!

It was indeed the AA I was forcing through my Nvidia control panel. I just turned it down a few settings and it seems to have stopped the flickering.

Glad I could help! I did notice things get weird with any MSAA higher than 4x.

For instance, only at 4x AA and Gamma Correction set to off was I able to get some AA as well as the sun glow back. Not sure what's up with all that.

I'm not sure but those are the exact same settings I found to work for me!
