Some of us just like to relieve our insanity by tossing useless comments when it looks like they might be good for a laugh.

As I said, due to limitations on my time and longstanding hardware problems (i.e. lack of memory) I've been unable to play SH4. I'm also usually pegged as a hardcore realism nut, which is partly true, but mainly I get my back up when people start bragging about how good they are while playing the easiest levels

But back to realistic fantasy (or fantastic reality): I think your idea is a great one. Multi-player is not really my thing, but I used to play SH2/Destroyer Command a lot, and sub vs. sub sounds like a fun diversion. I'd probably come to hate it, but only because I'm sure I'd stink at it. But I hope you can make it work. The more variations on a given theme, the more people will buy the game, which translates into more development by the developers, and more advances for the future.

Am I getting the right idea that you are looking for something for online play right? I don't want to sound insulting but from the way I read your post, it sounds like you haven't used the mission editor much? If not then make sure you go to the "Mission menu" select parameters and check mutiplayer then adversarial, and you should be good to go. As you say sub on sub needs some experimenting. Just for the heck of it I'm going to check something out. Be right back (Stop reading for now, cause I'm not typing) Never mind the light bulb just came on...duh. I was going to see if you could pick up the other sub on hydrophones but I don't have anyone to drive the other sub and you can't set it to go by itself, I forgot that part. Notice whenever you load a saved game you are always at "yes sir, all stop". That's what will happen.

Well, good luck, if I can help let me know.

American subs sank 9 axis subs in WWII. Don't know what the records for the British and Dutch are.

Point is- it's not something that is a recent development

Allied Submarines did sink some Axis subs in WWII, But this was when they we're on the surface using regular torpedoes, pretty much all of the Sub weapons in WWII (Even the Acoustic ones) we're geared towards ASuW rather then ASW

Dutch subs sank at least three: O-21 sank U-95 near Gibraltar, Zwaardvisch sank U-168 in the Java Sea and Dolfijn (?) sank an Italian sub (Malachite?), the last is from memory so I have to check to confirm this one. In the case of U-95, both subs were on the surface at night; in the other two, the Dutch sub was submerged, the Axis sub on the surface.

Just outside of Bergen, Norway, is a sunk german U-Boat, U-864, that was torpedoed by a british sub in the last leg of the war. Both subs were under water, and it was the first confirmed kill of submerged sub vs submerged sub. More here.

The mercury freighted on that U-Boat is a very real enviromental hazard today though. And I live virtually next-door to it...

But this was still done using regular ASuW Torpedoes. Right?

I'd assume the british sub used standard torpedoes. Both subs were at periscope depth as far as I've read. Hmm, there is a documentary about this episode, called "U864 Hitlers last deadly secret". You can find it on the VeohTV video browser.

They Had enough data to commit to a firing solution and fired a full
spread, for anyone who has learned to shoot manually it should be
apparent that luck probably didnt play into it too much.

Dont kid yourself about RN sub skippers, they tend to be very very
qualified historically.

Default Unsinkable U-boats!

The U-boat was actually schnorkeling and the sound of the diesels attrackted the british submarine. After 30minuntes the masts of the U-boat were visible and plotted. The british fired 4 torpedoes at 1000yds and got 1 hit!

As a matter of fact in WA mod in SH3, I had spotted a submerged wolfpack along the coast of Portugal (noise first then several periscopes). I plotted and fired against one U-boat to see what will happen. The torpedo hit near the steering rudder but the u-boat didn't sink!
