So am I to understand that you can use these surface ships in campaign mode? and they can be crewed? do they take damage? how well do they work over all? I remember in he past there were a lot of surface ships being put out but a lot of them wouldn't take damage or their guns didn't work...

Haven't been around for a while but I thought I might stop back in and pick up a sub but then again a may pick up a DD now...

These models look great - especially the late war FLETCHER-class. Thank you for releasing them outside of FOTRS!

Hi Hunter,

the Sumner´s all looks different.
It is not easy to decide wich bridge you should use cause there are so many different pictures in the net.

For example here are pictures from the USS DD -727 De Haven with the old bridge.

http://www.motionmodels.com/ships/dd/dd727.html

So what is truth ?
Your Version of the painting ore the version of the model ?

In the moment iam workin on it an my opinion is that i will bring the Sumner with the open old bridge and the Smith with the new closed one.
So you got bothe version of bridgesystem.

Regards

Maddy

Hi Mad,

The bridge that Hunter brought up only applied to the first 10-15 or so of the Sumners.

It was based on British practice, but was found to be very awkward to use and very unpopular.

AFAIK, only one DesDiv deployed with Sumners with bridges like that. They were part of the support forces for Operation Neptune/Overlord.

As a result of their experiences with the "British" bridge, BuShips elected to change over to the later style - rebuilding the earlier ships.

So the earlier bridge was only in use for a few months at most. I don't think any Sumners deployed to the Pacific with it.

Either way, it would be very, very rare to see one.

The later style would make more sense, as that was the only type the vast majority of Sumners had, as well as the only type that the Gearings were fitted with.

Hope that helps!

Mike.

Hi, I have not posted here for a long time, but I thought that I would offer my congratulations on these fabulous DDs. I spent ages correcting the hull profile on the Lindberg 1/125 Fletcher DD, the Melvin because to allow for the gimmicky rotating torp tubes, turrets and rangefinder they turned the gunwhile in ino a dead straight line. which looked ridiculous.
OK. The Ubisoft Fletcher model partly does this very same thing, but especially if you look at the freeboard over the last one third of the hull towards the stern, this is modelled far too high. A close look at the photos of the real thing and the plans here seem to verify this. I believe at flank speed, the sterns could be driven down so far that they almost seemed to become submerged. If I am mistaken in this I would really appreciate hearing other views on this, as it drove me nuts on the model trying to get it right because it was so essential to the character of the class. The same would also apply to the Sims as well. I still think these new models are outstanding regardless. BRAVO!

Ok,

i will bring them with bothe Bridge-designs.
The Sumner-Class with the old design and the Smith-Class with the new design.
The Gearing is not planned cause they come to late.
Its ot making sense to built this class.

I think this is a choice wich makes everybody lucky

Ok Captains,

here they are !

1.) Sumner Class with high funnel and old british style bridge ( early version )

Now he got the double 40mm AA at the right place behind the bridge.
In front behind the second maingun he got now 4 x 20mm Single just like the original.

2.) Smith Class with lower funnel and modern complete closed bridge ( late version )

Here you can see the reworked hull on backside

I hope you can live with them !

I will upload the DD-Package today again until i have worked out the new sil-files for them.

Regards

Yep, I knew that there were early and late types of brige, but didn't know that so few of Sommers class were made withe old one. The idea was that old version was almost fine too and there is a reason to make Samner and Smith (or Gearing) with different types of brige to have more differences. Thus as there were only 10 with british type which served at Atlantic its not wery important.

I noticed that the US Ensign is flying on the outer yardarm... should it be flying on the mainmast lanyard itself?
