Default Hot tea raises cancer risk for smokers and drinkers

Some like it hot — but let that steaming cup of tea cool off before sipping if you smoke cigarettes or consume more than one alcoholic beverage a day.

Quote:
According to a study by Chinese researchers, the Annals of Internal Medicine warns that drinking tea at very high temperatures — “hot” or “burning hot” — is “associated with an increased risk for esophageal cancer when combined with excessive alcohol or tobacco use.”

Tobacco and alcohol are known risk factors for cancer of the esophagus — the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach. The ten-year Chinese study factored in tea drinking. Participants included 450,000 people aged 30 to 79 across ten different regions in China.

Subjects who reported drinking hot or burning hot tea every day and who also drank more than one alcoholic beverage daily had a 127% increased risk of esophageal cancer. Daily tea drinkers who consumed it at a hot or burning hot temperature and smoked had a 56% higher risk of developing esophageal cancer.

I don't drink tea, tea is for sick people. I drink red wine, far better syrup for decease!
I think drinking water and inhaling air also cause cancer. What does not in our days...

"Decease" instead of "disease": a Freudian slip, perhaps?...

I like hot tea in the wintertime, but never "burning" hot. It hurts!. I also don't drink alcohol or smoke at all. Iced tea in the summer, or Doctor Pepper.

Of course those are almost certainly bad for you too. On the other hand, I don't expect to make it out alive anyway.

Eat, drink and be merry... for tomorrow we die.

all things in moderation.

Even the very oxygen you breathe every day slowly kills you through the process of cellular oxidation.

you're damned if you do, damned if you dont

so have a dram of whiskey, enjoy the swirling smoke of a cigar, have a glass of wine and enjoy your tea at whatever temperature you prefer.

everything kills you, and you have only one way of making and keeping the appointment on your own terms... by suicide. Otherwise, your appointment with the reaper might be tonight, or tomorrow or in 50 years time. so live each day as if it were your last.

Hot tea yes but not painful that its too hot and as for booze on average one bottle of Ale a week.

I read some years ago we humans should not breath in oxygen as this ages us and causes illness. I can say no one is going to kick the habit.

Okay you win Steed ... but for anyone else with throat problems in this nasty flu season .. I recommend the old USN remedy: https://lifehacker.com/5649856/gargl...-cold-or-cough

Gargling with Salt Water Actually Helps a Cold or Cough

Quote:
A saline solution can draw excess fluid from inflamed tissues in the throat, making them hurt less, said Dr. Philip T. Hagen ... (He also) pointed out that gargling also loosens thick mucus, which can remove irritants like allergens, bacteria and fungi from the throat.

A randomized study of 400 people during cold and flu season also found that salt water gargling three times a day, with or without a cold actually being felt, reduced respiratory infections up to 40 percent.
