I've been considering that... didn't want it to get too overdone, if you know what I mean, but I might do something with the ventral and/or tail gunners.

All in all, even unfinished as yet, I think it's outstanding work! You can can almost feel the terror felt on both sides. Were I a BF-109 pilot, just thinking about those big .50 Cals. makes my skin crawl. Same thing on the other side of the coin; that Messerschmitt packs a wallop with its nose cannon.

Default Finished

I've decided I shall probably crop the painting to look like this:

This is the uncropped picture; I had wondered at the start whether it wouldn't maybe look more dramatic if I cropped the B-17. Downside is that I could've drawn the whole bigger and not wasted anything:

(I took fumo's advice about defensive fire)

Well U should show defensive tracer from the upper turrets of both B-17's which would probably be toward the starboard fighter as flight-box defensive protection from the lower bomber-perhaps from the tailgunner as well. The portside waist-gun should be dealing with nearest fighter in the artwork only. Neither fighter need be shooting at just the moment depicted which will solve your overdone issue. Are those the in-wing A cannon-armed Bf 109E, showing the 20 mm MG FF installations in the wing. or the heavier VI underwing gondola cannon kits? Pic's enlarge The angle portrayed makes it difficult to tell.

My idea was that the upper gunner has been trying to hit the smaller fighter but is missing it... unable to track it because of its speed and close proximity (I've got fire coming from the ventral ball and tail gunners directed at unseen targets). I considered waist gunner fire but it would have cut across the picture at an angle that cut it in half and maybe spoiled the momentum (anyway, this picture could easily represent a moment in between bursts).

The nearest fighter is firing at an unseen bomber 'off screen' with its nose and underwing cannon.

I had another go at this today and beefed up the AA fire after seeing how it gave drama to the B-17 picture. I've also improved the sky, which was just "there" before and didn't seem to contribute much.

Thanks, CW. I got this one framed up and on a gallery wall today... they look so much better like this (in real life, I mean) than as a cropped digital image.

Default "K5054"

I'm still trying to get a decent photo of this painting (the only one I ever decided to keep for myself). It was published many years ago as a birthday card by Polytint Cards

The original K5054 had only a short life before it ws lost in a fatal landing accident at Farnborough on the 4th September 1939, just a day after war was declared.

A replica was created as a permanent memorial to those that had worked on the aircraft including the design team at Supermarine in Southampton.
