Was that true that in 1943 allied aircrafts that were covering convoys has been droping color smoke capsules into the water to mark positions of spoted u-boat for the destroyer escorts ?

Also I've read that some Aircraft droped bombs were fited with color paint to mark the estimate position of the u-boat on explosion for the destroyers to find it easier. This means that the water was colored around the explosion area of droped bombs from aircraft ?! Was that really true ? OMG!

Air dropped die markers and smoke floats to mark a submarine contact datum point date back to 1918 if I recall correctly.

Although aircraft only sank one submarine (this is disputed by some) in the Great War they were used extensively on the convoy lanes near land particularly those crossing the Channel and by the Armistice some pretty sophisticated ASW techniques were in place.
