It is good to have a variety of topics on the forum.
If all the questions were of the nature of:

Why did this V-2 mod set my computer on fire?

or

How do I remove the UBER - Fascist DRM software from my game?

it would be a very dull time here.

Currently, I'm playing Fall Of The Rising Sun. In that game I'm playing with only outside cams on (I like the eye candy).

Playing the German's this time on my Unterseaboote 199. On second patrol now. Just sank a T3 tanker and a Liberty Cargo. Only three torps expended. I tend to not play by the exact rules suggested we play by. For in my case, I use the cannon when possible. I can stay out on patrol longer if I preserve my fish.

I don't use the O'Kane methods or anything else. I use the old fashioned TDC as it was intended. I let the computer calculate the course for the torpedoes. I've gotten pretty good at finding the angle on the bow. So I don't need any weird targeting schemes anymore. I tend to use the electric variants because I don't like the bubbles from gas torpedoes. Since I'm pretty much shooting from close range (< 2000 meters), I don't need the gas anyway. I tend to intentionally target the propulsion systems do stop the target. I try to hit each target to stop them and come back to finish the job after all targets have been disabled. This saves the fish used and I can be picky about where I want to shoot from.

Also because the German TDC has no position keeper I use their tracking torpedoes to knock the props off.

If the convoy is escorted, well, things get a little dicey. I take my target out and then hide. I try not to go after escorts but have been known to do a down the throat shot or two before, if they piss me off enough.

I tend to stay in deep water if the option allows it. I hate fighting in shallow water. If the convoy is escorted and is in shallow water I may track it till it crosses some deep water somewhere, then make the kill.

A good skipper makes full use of the available tools and environment available. I've done a few sonar only kills but the difficulty is much and many times the target can get away if you are not in the right spot at the beginning of the track. So I tend not to prefer such. But during storms and heavy fog, it sometimes can't be avoided. Most times I'll just track and get behind the target. Then shoot his props out from behind and then take my time to finish it off. Radar helps immensely here as you can lose your target in the storm if it stops completely from sonar only.

Also, I no longer worry about saving fuel just to get max efficiency unless the mission were to require it. I'll run the boat at full and when radar signals are found or planes spotted, I dive and stay down about 1.5 or so hours. Then I might come back up on the surface to run if the water is calm. It doesn't bother me any more to just ride the rest of the day out underwater. I usually don't run my batteries down past 50% though.

Well, that's enough chatter.

XO, make your depth 40 meters. All ahead slow.

"Sit down Heini, Ah... tastes like bilge, oil, and green mold.... "

On the other hand,

"I have no idea what he is, or what he thinks.
I don't wanna know the men I'm... trying to destroy.

Count me in with the "haven't played that much lately" crowd. Heck, even when I played a lot my interests were more in how things worked than in being the baddest skipper. I can't fart and chew gum at the same time!

I've been pretty successful in the game but I'm not about to compare my skills to anyone else's. I don't consider myself an exceptional player at all and would be very surprised if I rated in the top half in game skill.

But that's not why I play. I play because I learned more about American Submarines from playing SH4 than from all the books I've ever read. In fact, many of the books I have read were because I was playing SH4. And because I heard about those books from you guys here at Subsim.

Agreed, I only had/have a passing knowledge of WW2 subs until I started playing and reading from this forum. I have been shown sites, books and information that you just can't get watching flicks. The WW2 Submarine has taken a fairly decent chunk of my interests since that time and even though I'll never be an "expert" (don't really want to be), it's just one more aspect of WW2 that I've come to learn and respect.
Cheers and Good Hunting RR.

Same here... I never called myself as expert in sims. I stated that I play with the motif of regular plot. Anyhow, I'm now away from SH... I'm more busy playing A-10c.... Cleared Hot!!

Yeah, Aside from the fact that all you have to do to be the "baddest" is to lie your butt off, that's never been the point to most people on this forum and you can tell. I enjoy this site because, through this dialog I learn. That is, someone jump starts a discussion and a lot of the time I come out of reading the posts more knowledgeable about the subject at hand than when I went in. Granted there are times when certain subjects are beaten to death but we also must remember that we have newbies joining from time to time and they get the same direction that we needed when we joined. I enjoy seeing the new Skippers out there get some good info from our seasoned players and boost their gaming experiance to a level they would surely have never reached without this site.
Good Hunting.

That's where my kick comes in. I love to take a complicated process and simplify it to the point that a newbie who came in with no prior knowledge can immediately begin sinking targets on full manual mode. I'm less concerned about the fine details and complications that lots of other people love (I do too, but not for what I teach) and more concerned about producing success before frustration drives what used to be an enthusiastic player to quit the game.

The question became "what don't people have to understand, what don't people have to do to sink a target." The answer turns out to be that you don't have to know how to do very much at all and you can retain full accuracy.

That's the fun of the game for me: keeping players from quitting and turning them into people who can brag they are better skippers than I am. Matter of fact I define success as developing skippers so good that I can't qualify to captain a submarine.

And I greatly appreciated it.

By the way, the whole point of this post was not showing who achieved the bad ass status, but rather who mastered the game. I didn't apparently, but the discussion was about who could do any of the first post abilities without even looking into the map. And it's good to have folks like RR, Armi, Dog, and Raz helping with stuff like this.
