I'd have thought the pilot would have suspected something was amiss when he never flew over any water

The company who chartered the aircraft is working with BA to figure out how this happened.

The crew executed a flawless flight to Edinburgh... because all of the paperwork, dispatch forms, flight plan etc told them thats where the airplane needed to go. Even when calling for the clearance under their flight number, air traffic control provided the fully expected flight plan clearance to Edinburgh with no surprises or re-routes.

unfortunately, all of the passengers had another destination in mind.

Logistical error of some sort, somehow along the way, the previous day's flight plan to Edinburgh and back to London was erroneously filed again for the next day instead of the correct flight plan. it was basically in a way - copy / pasted with a date change.

so, when the pilot printed his release paperwork, literally everything on the form confirmed, without so much as a typo or anything amiss in any way, that his assignment was to fly the aircraft to Edinburgh.

oh well, things happen.
