[REL] gap - Sonar Sound Collection

  • Description: Sonar Sound Collection v 1.0 for SH 5

  • Author: gap

  • About this mod:
    Regrettably, I’ve never been pinged by a British destroyer in my life, but according to some accounts by former U-boatmen, the sound of a sonar ping -as heard inside a submarine- could be alternatively described as “a hammer hitting the hull”, “gravel or pebbles bouncing off the hull” or even “the sound of steel cables being dragged against the hull (!)”. Confused by these partly contrasting descriptions, I’ve decided to collect some sound samples available on the web that seemed to match one or more of the above descriptions, letting players to chose the one they like most. The mod is thus available in four versions:

    - “Distorted”: a gloomy, somehow disturbing sound, taken from a vintage recording;
    - “Booming”: another grim sound with a lot of reverb that will make you to jump on your seat;
    - “High-pitched”: a piercing and quite irritating sound that will make you to hate your pursuers;
    - “Das Boot”: the (stereo)typical ping as heard in many movies, captured from the film by Wolfgang Petersen in this case. Probably not very realistic, yet highly evocative.

  • What is new:
    - New Sonar.wav (main ping sound);
    - New Sonar_Coat.wav and Sonar_Coat_imp.wav (ping sounds heard after selecting anechoic coatings as sub upgrade).

  • Compatibility:
    - compatible with any version of Silent Hunter 5 and any major sound mega mod;
    - it should be compatible with previous issues of the Silent Hunter series as well.

  • Known bugs:
    none, as far as I know, but NOTICE that some of the sounds featured in this mod might contain frequencies harmful for your auditory system. Should you sustain prolonged pinging or feel any discomfort during it, PROTECT YOUR EARS OR REDUCE THE GAME VOLUME.

  • Installation:
    - install JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler if you have not done it yet, and configure it to the SH5 installation path (detailed instructions on how to configure it found here);
    - look into your main <Silent Hunter 5> installation folder for a subfolder called <MODS> and create if it is not there;
    - unzip any version of the mod and drop it as it is into the <MODS> folder;
    - enable it after any other sound mod affecting the above mentioned files, using JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler.

  • Acknowledgements:
    - volodya61 for suggestions and beta testing;
    - Sailor Steve and Ktl_Kurtz for reporting on this thread of subsim’s forum the above mentioned descriptions of the real sonar sound as heard by U-boat veterans.
