A bit of trivia: The rationale for having glass in the first place was simple, US Fleet boats were not seen as front line combatants initially. Mostly the USN saw them in support roles and intelligence. Amongst the other things that were changed were "cut down" sheer waters and removal of extra metal.

Check out the before and after pictures for the USS Thresher. Quite a change.

Can you imagine the radar target the pre-war Thresher conning tower would have presented? Not to mention the sillouette? Even with Japanese radar in the operational state it was early in the war, which was fairly primitive (when measured against US radar standards of the same time period) that early conning tower would have been a dead giveaway...

The later cut down conning tower also had the advantage of mounting extra AAA guns, which were also very good at chewing up sampans and the like.

Foo, what version of PaintshopPro do you use?

Think I might have a go at some skinning too.

Foo, there's multiple tool you can use to do skinning/texture editting:
Should you decide to go illegal (not my concern lol ) i suggest you use photoshop. It's already capable of working directly on plain DDS with a simple free plugin from nvidia's website. Should you get used to it (not more difficult than others...), it's really powerfull. For a free competitive one, i suggest you use Gimp.

I use several, PSP7, Photoshop (with DDS plug-ing) and Iphoto plus 4.
I also use DXT BMP for conversion between DDS and BMP and TGA.

But remember I am old fashioned painter.. I do not use layers.
I just start painting (BMP's) untill it's ready (with lots of saved BMP's).

It's good to hear more people want to start skinning.
I kinda rolled into modding other stuff like the manual.

It's not that it's illegal to use photoshop , it's because if you decide to use it, i don't think you're gonna buy it Since it's the "creme de la creme" in image editing, it costs quite a lot.

Here's the link, I don't think it completely compatible with patch 1.4
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=123206

I have run it with the new patch and it seems to work.
But the patch changed something in these files but I do not know what.

here it is.. my latest skin, Narwhal Class hi-res subskin.
It's for Duci's version 1.3 (Sargo body with Porpoise tower).

This skin can not be used simultaneous which either Sargo or Porpoise.
