Default ASDIC and me

So it's june of 40 and i intercept this convoy heading for bristol. I attack and make good, but of course i am pinged and hunted. now pretty much everywhere south of Ireland and east to Bristol, is about 70 - 80 meters deep, i am on the floor and dodging charges left and right, i even evade a few mines i never knew were there! These escorts hunt me for four hours even after all the fireworks are gone. I am rigged silent, and stay to the floor. It is only when I get to a small pocket that is deeper than 100m that i get away from these guys. I mean, 100m is that the secret to losing escorts? Is there any other way? It really stinks having to travel at 2 knots at 8 TC for over 4 hours of game time.

Hunt in deeper water. I won't touch anything under 300 m depth.

“Shallow-water Asdic” mod

It was always much harder to detect U-boats with asdic in shallow waters than in deep water, due to
tides, wrecks, rocks and similar. From October 1944 - May 1945, U-boats with schnorchels patrolled
very close to land around the British Isles, the so-called ‘Inshore Campaign’, relying for their
protection on the poor detection ability of Asdic in shallow waters, with their fast tides, large rocks
and ancient wrecks.
SH3 does not model the failure of Asdic in shallow water at all. This mod changes asdic capability
according to the depth of the sea. Specifically, the ‘minimum surfaces’ (MinSurface, MS) of asdics
(original values found in file ‘AI_Sensors.dat’) are now changed according to sea-depth in four bands....

That should improve your chances of evasion when in shallow water in the future. And it's based on historical performance.

Argh! I MUST remember to re-read manuals and readme files occasionally - I have that patch but have always avoided shallow waters.

^Sound wisdom! By 1943; in such shallow seas? you'll be dead for sure. But don't fret; The Old Lion, ADM Donitz has already placed your posthumous promotion to KorvettanKapitän in your file (a common practice) and the Fatherland thanks you in advance for your devoted service. All of which put's me in the way of a mod idea. The nature of a crash dive was a very dicey affair as Goebbler's book on the U-505 reveals. He was the crewman dive guy assigned to valve control in the 'Zentralle'. One screw-up by a crewman, in haste, could be fatal as the dive would be unrecoverable. Can and should there not be a random oops mod...it had to have happened...more than once. We'll call it the 'watery borne mod'

Obviously, Dönitz and Company didn't know what they were doing when they launched the Inshore Campaign.

It was the best they could do under the time and circumstances...

If that were true, it would mean that patrolling indeep water was even more dangerous.

While it sounds like there might be a mod to change things up a bit, you were very lucky to get out of that scrape with only 100 meters of water. But it was only 1940.

Later in the war I don't risk any engagement with a possibility of depth retaliation without 100% hull integrity and the ability to go to at least 200 meters.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. I will stay deeper. I just know that staying near the ground in RL is never a bad idea and thought they modeled this in game.

If I make it to late 1944, I'm going to follow BdU's orders. From what I've understood about hedgehogs and late war escorts is that if they find me I'm going to get sunk no matter what the depth is. Shallow water dictates being very cautious and only shooting from very long range. They can't kill me if they can't find me.

"They" do. But "they" are h.sie and Stiebler, not Ubisoft.

Default Mod by Stiebler

Hi guys;

Is this mod by Stiebler available stand alone or is it part of a larger mod? It sounds like a good one.

Cheers
