Default New to SH5!

Hello eveyone, I am just starting with SH5 after years on and off with SH3 (with GWX).

I finished installing yesterday, along with the latest TWOS and played with some of the realism options and historical missions... and boy was I lost.

It looks like it is quite the learning curve for this one if coming from SH3/GWX. Are there any simplified guides? I see the links here in the stickies, but it seems daunting to go through all of it (which I will as time goes on) but are there any simple guides to be able to get started the right away?

I also see through the JSGME that there are a bunch of optional mods, any of those that you would consider essential? So far, I haven't enable any.

Beyond those found in JSGME, are there any other ones that I should add to a SH5/TWOS install?

I really look forward to learning this one and I hope it provides as much enjoyment as SH3/GWX did for me over the years.

Thanks!

PD. Saludos a los capitanes españoles, veo que hay unos cuantos por aqui.

It seems daunting at first, but in my opinion; much of the complexities of say the tools for aiding with trigonometry et al; they're more at home in the classroom; as the angriffsscheibe, AoB tools etc are great, but you can still get by making best-guesstimates. I still love that they exist though, point being that you can get stuck in and have success without knowing how they work, but it helps.

The parts that affect game-play which I enable in JSGME are;

Encrypted BdU Orders
Real Nav'

This means that I need to decrypt occasional BdU messages (not all, but I'm working on that), also I will not receive map position updates (for anything), I either have to do the navigation myself (Dead-reckoning, Celestial Navigation, known point triangulation, etc), or rely on the Bootsmann to give me good fixes (he makes mistakes, especially if it's only DR upon DR).

I'm not aware of any quick guides for it overall, F1 gets you the controls list, the TDC functions as one would expect from most other SHs.

I've gone a slight step further and had the HUD hidden until I need it, but that's not necessary.

Thank you! I will certainly try those that you mention, the Real Nav sounds really really interesting, I just don't think I am yet ready for it when I barely can get out of port

The TWOS strong suggestion to manually save when you get in the bunker when starting a campaign, is it before or after receiving the orders and accepting the mission? Or before I even ask the gentleman about any orders?

I also saw in some videos for that first mission in the campaign if you report the contacts they do get attack by planes and a task force... do I need to report hourly, just once and how long until friendlies appear?

Thanks!

Welcome to SH5

- you need to save as soon in bunker, then exit and reload.

- just report once should make it

Well... crap! I spent a few days trying out the historical missions to get familiar and stuff. Yesterday I was ready to start the campaign, so excited. I get home from work and fire it up... after the Ubisoft loud splash screen, boom the computer shuts down. Ok, just a fluke, tried again, shut down, I panic. So, I uninstall everything, clean the registry and reinstall SH5, plus patch and start it again (no TWOS) it blows up again.

I am thinking windows must have pushed an update or something that makes the game not run... or maybe a graphic card driver update? I saw here to try compatibility mode (windows 7) and disabling the "Display Scaling On High DPI Settings", but no matter what the whole thing crashes and restarts the laptop

Any ideas guys? Its a windows 10 with AMD card in case the info helps... hopefully I can get it to work again...

Thank you!!

Is it a graceful shutdown/restart, i.e. it warns you, or does it just turn off without ceremony? Because if it's the latter it could be overheating and need a blasting out with compressed air.

My install is on Win 7 64, via Steam and I don't see anything from Ubi, just the TWoS screen etc, so this could be a Win 10 related problem.

I see comments about running the game as admin, too, for me it prompts me each time.
