Can anyone tell me when I am designing a mission on an AI sub, how do I get them to expose thier periscope?

You can't, they don't.

You could script the event... place a trigger attached to the submarine that will fire when a helo or aircraft comes close... you can use this to send messages to the player or instantly reveal the position of the submarine to a certain side (using the solution or engage commands in the mission scripts).
You have to think outside the box when designing missions for DW, considering carefully how you want the mission to be experienced and using the best tools available to put the show on. The engine is such that at the mission design level, most missions that have a distinct path to follow have to be made using more scripts and triggers than it would seem necessary at first. Mission designers have gotten around this by designing more open ended missions without specific scripted events or by carefully managing each scripted event and using a unique solution for each situation. Cheers, David
