Default A sad day for the US navy- funny story... please read XD

okay so im playing dangerous waters with the RA mod. Im in the GIUK gap in the Gepard Akula II imp, 20m above the bottom at 3 knots, trying to do my best impression of a hole in the water, you all know the drill.

20 seconds in I hear torpedo in the water, which is rare when im like this so I deside to go to show truth to watch what happens.

heres the picture it draws. I have an American Ohio class SSBN and an American Benjamin Franklin class SSBN to the east of me. The Ben Franklin had fired 2 mk-48s at the Ohio. The Ohio went to flank speed and lauched a decoy. the Torpedo's then split up, one went after the Ohio and one after the decoy. The Ohio was sunk by the first torpedo and quickly fell to the bottom. the second blasted through the decoy, and then tried to find its target. it spun around until it located the Ben Franklin, and chased it down and sank itself.

So in otherwords, this is my greatest patrol yet. two American boomers were sunk and I didn't have to so much as flood a tube sorry America...

Did you do anything to make either of the subs think that the track they fired at was you? It sounds more like the AI exhibiting artificial stupidity than anything else. Then again, I use LWAMI for my DW megamod. I do not know if RA has any known weirdness in its AI.

haha not that im aware of. An Akula II improved sitting just above the bottom at 3 knots 5600m away from nearest enemy is very hard to detect. plus I was further south then the Ohio, and the torpedos were locked perfectly on the Ohio's bearing, so im certain that the Ohio was the target. And its very possible with the RA mod, I haven't played Lwami but I got the feel it was directed to enhance the realism of the game engine, whereas the RA mod was more into adding models. I got it because it offered closer to 25 playable subs including SSBNs and added a bunch of the newer subs, plus new weapons and environmental models.

Sounds like the AI was simply out to lunch. Carry on.

Another story of AS (Artifical Stupidity)...

I'm as new as possible with DW.
Before even installing the game (v 1.04, vanilla) I red the manual (common platform info + specific 688i class info). The I also red a tons of tutorials and subsim threads (mainly about DW acustics model).

Last week I made my first single mission, Barents sea loiter.
Set autocrew to every stations, you know, it was my baptism of fire.
Well I estabilished and mainteined contatc with the carrier group in the 19-20 nm range... Was not able to positive classify the destroyers, only the carrier, and forget about the supposed escorting Akula...

I was very paranoid about been heard or positive pinged so I keep distance moving slowly and closing with the group positioning myself behind their baffles while they were moving along their course...

I was so afraid by the Akula (and my own inexperience) that I chosen to attack for the fartest possible range, from behind (I was supposing the Akula would not be positioned behind the group, to me that was the less tactical/logical position for her in the context of her mission).

I know that to completly meet my goals I should be able to sink the carrier and at least damege both escorting vessels, by I decided that just damaging the carrier and coming back to talk about it was a high enough accomplishment for me

So, after 6 patient hours of realtime play I found myself behind them.
First I spoiled the launch of all my TSAMs not being at the correct minimum depth (was 1 meter below ) then I fired 2 groups of 2 torpedos: 1 couple at the carrier and the other at one of the other two vessels (the one I was able to heard both in passive sonar and in the active intercept).

To make a long story short:
1) I hit something with one of my torpedoes, all the others missed their targets.
2) I was able to escape.

///// And now for the "strange" part

I wanted to know who exactly I hit, with which effect and where all the other vessels were so I turned Truth on. The carrier was indeed hit, one or two of her propellers now dead, she was running in a circle. The others two destroyers/escort, unscathed by my attack, were running in bigger circles around the carrier. One of them in clockwise direction, the other in anti-clockwise direction.

I was going away slowly and silently, with a growing sense of satisfaction cause my attack indeed hit the carrier and (in a roleplay sense) was truly a success cause the russian operation was spoiled, my crew was safe, and my boat undetected (well, more or less)

I was preparing to hit the "End Mission" button when a message informed me that I had done a great job completing the mission objectives destroying or damaging all enemy surface platforms.... WHAT???

I checked and the two escorts were no more to be found, only the damaged carrier remained, still helpless circling. It look liked the two genius destroyer commanders collided with each other vessel in theirs zealous, absurd, reciprocal CW/anti-CW circle patterns around the carrier... or at least that's what I think did happend. I do not have a better explanation. ...

Anyway this fact steal away from me any sense of sactisfaction, and even if me and my crew were toasted on our triumphant return to the base the whole affair felt strange at best.

Yes, I have recently installed LWAMI mod in the hope to mitigate this aspect of the vanilla game... I do not know if the mod could mitigate issues like the ones discussed in this thread but I understood that it corrects some quirks of the AI.

I wasn't going to mention this, but it seems appropriate in the context of the thread. I'm just learning the platforms at the moment, so all I'm doing is lots of quick missions without autocrew. I'm finding the FFG towed array quite a challenge, but that's a different story....

So. I was playing with a P3 East of the Falklands and given the small area I was searching, it didn't take me long to hear submarine noises. I got two DIFARs giving me a position, a contact on the MAD pass. I dropped a mark 50, which failed to hit anything, and then stuff got confused. Sound signature was consistent with a Kilo but I never got it pinned down exactly. There was a layer at about 500 feet, but I was also getting lots of torpedo signatures and others from US subs. I confess my sonar skills aren't up to making an accurate picture of the goings on below me, but I know not to fire into melee, so I circled around dropping deep and shallow buoys, trying to get enough of a picture of the tactical situation to be able to fire on the Kilo without hitting the US Sub [s].

Long story short, eventuallyt all I could hear were US subs, could have been a Los Angeles and a Seawolf or maybe it was just one and I never made a positive ID. Ieventually gave up, and before I did I hit Show truth and the Kilo was about ten miles away heading ENE.

Lessons learned? If I ever come aross anything like that again then I guess I'll fly an expanding search pattern and hope to either snot the escaping enemy or hear of his demise. I did briefly consider carpet bombing though
