Default IJN Super Oiler, Tonan Maru #2

For all you excellent modders out there, here is a ship I think would make a great addition to the SH4 ship collection, the Japanese super oiler, Tonan Maru #2, a former Japanese whaler factory ship. Have at it... (P.S. I did not create this, I got it off the Internet. I have a lot more to learn about modding before I could create anything this good).

Here's an actual photo... I did a BING search on her, then clicked on IMAGES. Lots of good pics and info.

It may not be historically accurate for the WW2 timeframe, but does anyone know if the Japanese had any merchants even close to the size/tonnage numbers of this thing back in the day?

Yes. There were actually two of these monster oil tankers during WW2 that were used by the Japanese. Tonan Maru's 2 and 3.

Tonan Maru #2 was torpedoed by the US submarine Pintado, in the South China Sea. Tonan Maru #3 was sunk in Truk Lagoon by US Carrier aircraft.

The Japanese also had several ocean liners that they captured when WW2 started, that were used as troop transports. Some of these ships were over 15,000 tons.

Just GOOGLE or BING Tonan Maru #2 and check out several good websites on these ships. You can also click on IMAGES at the top of the page to see several good photos of them too. Here is Tonan Maru #3.

The Tonan Maru #2 amassed a gross tonnage of close to 19,000 tons. You can find some info here.

Also check out the story of the USS Tinosa and the Tonan Maru #3. Check the First and Second War Patrols.

Because of what happened between the US submarine Tinosa and the Tonan Maru #3, you could say she helped the US finally fix the DUD problems with the Mark 14 Torpedo.

Transforming ship models from CFS2 into SH4 is possible, but takes some extra work. They need new textures, and adding rudders, propellers and propeller shafts, so it is not a 5-minute conversion.

I've done it twice, and I'm not sure it's worth the effort.

Thanks guys for the info on those two bigguns! I'd love to have a shot or three at them in a game.

Max.....go for it, brudda! If you wanna give modding them a try for SH4, then have at it. G'luck and looking forward to your finished product.

I need a signature down here......this big empty sace looks soooo lonely. ACK!!!
