Default Finland's contribution to good health

"Saunas appear to have a blood pressure lowering effect, which may underlie the beneficial effect on stroke risk"

The report in the journal Neurology is the first to assess the relationship between saunas and strokes, and was based on more than 1,600 people who were followed for an average of 15 years.
Those who spent time in the sauna four to seven days a week showed a 61 percent lower risk of having a stroke than people who went just once a week, it said.
A benefit was also apparent for those who took saunas two or three times a week, with a 14 percent lower stroke risk than those who took saunas once per week.

Might have to convert a room into one! FYI, Sauna is the most common, if not the only Finnish word used in English. Growing up in Minnesota and Wisconsin one could always find a sauna.

I'd like to know just how many people have these in their own homes in Finland? But if most Finns have to make use of a public facility, how can they find the time to use them so regularly?

I should imagine that in the UK, most people who do things like using the gym or the public swimming baths (or even saunas) do so maybe once a week; people who went to these places nearly every day would be regarded by the rest of us as being rather obsessed... not least because it must eat heavily into their 'family' time unless they all go together. So how can Finns afford to spend so much time just sitting around in towels?

These kinds of story further promote the image of the nordic countries as populated exclusively by fit, affluent 30-40 year-olds living in enormous log-cabins with a sauna attached and a saab in the log-garage (which is underfloor-heated like the rest of the place and has a remote controlled door)

I kind of think life's not really like that for most Finns...

Houses and row houses tend to usually have a sauna, apartment buildings often have a general sauna in the basement or in increasing cases every flat's got a small sauna of their own.

Most don't go to sauna every day, but once or twice a week. The long term health benefits aren't really the reason we use sauna, but the relaxation and short term benefits such as cleaning the skin pores (as sweat pushes through them) and increased blood circulation.

I can't see that ever happening in England... having enough space in your house just to keep stuff is always a problem here, and despite what they may be telling their insurers, many people leave their cars outside and use their garages (if they're lucky enough to have one) for the overspill... so where the hell could we put a sauna??

Going to a communal sauna once a week, well that would be do-able. Brits would want a bar in there, however... so we might as well just sit in the pub in the summer and keep all the windows closed

An authentic simulation of life in Finland can be had here (warning profanity and vulgar behaviour):

Maybe they were less likely to have strokes because they actually had time in their lives to get 4 to 7 saunas a week.

I think I could achieve the same thing in Thailand with 4 to 7 foot massages a week.
