I guess they should have made SH4 an open boat where we run around inside and shoot each other a 1000 times. They seem to handle those games with numerous patches. --Longam UBI SHIV Forums

A sad day has dawned...

Where are you located when you took those pics? Date, etc. I'm looking for teh right weather conditions since I've not found the skies with clouds like that, yet...and I have all the mods enabled and 8800GTX card... I'd like to confirm that I have my rig, card, and Mods working correctly.

Thanks..

S-38 (SS-143), 2nd war patrol
1942
Feb 18, Surabaya
After an uneventful 1st patrol to the Celebes Sea, S-38 and her crew are ready to depart Surabaya for a 2nd patrol. There are several new faces on board and XO Pete Reed reports everyone is ready to take the war to the enemy. We have apporximately 10 days to bring the new transfers up to speed on how S-38 operates.

Feb 27
We've drawn the Bashi Channel in the Luzon Straits. I don't think I could have asked for a better assignment, we should have plenty of opportunities.

Route to our patrol zone in the Bashi Channel, transit time approx. 1 week. We need to be on our toes as this is a hot route all the way.

0001
Depart Surabaya

Fishing boats spotted

March 3
Bad news on the radio, Perch (SS-176) is overdue and presumed lost. She should have been somehwere in this area. The crew is on edge as this information makes it way around the ship. David A. Hurt Sr. was captain of Perch.

S-38 makes her way north into the Sulu Sea on or around March 3.

March 5

Suthern Sulu Sea, Aircraft spotted, crash dive. A/C made no attack.

Two A/C out of the sunrise, crash dive, A/C made no attack.

A/C spotted, crash dive, A/C made no attack. Growing weary of the yo-yo ride, will try to ride out the afternoon at 150 feet.
1630
Battery down to 33%, surface for recharge. I don't want to get into a position where a low battery will hurt us. There shouldn't be that much daylight left

March 8
0840
Mindoro Strait, heavy seas, clear sky, battery recharged to 60%. Ship spotted at 191 relative, long range. Will investigate.

Thin wisp of smoke barely visible as we turn to investigate

0853
Funnel aft, 2 masts. Appears to be a tanker. And Japanese.

Small Japanese tanker identifed on the morning of March 8, 1942

0902
General quarters signaled. Target's course seems to be NW at least matching our 7 knot speed.
0907
Took the boat to periscope depth. A surface attack is out of the question and I want to press this attack now because I don't want to risk running into the Japanese air force again while shadowing this target on the surface. We don't have the battery or underwater speed for an extended underwater chase. Battery is at 61%, that should be more than sufficient for this attack.
0913
The situation thus far

0918
All four forward tubes fired from roughly 800 yards. TDC solution was good. Number 3 was fired slightly aft, number 4 slightly forward.
0918xx
One impact heard, one heard to smack the target's hull as a dud, and 2 seemed to go right underneath which seems odd. All torpedoes were set to 10 feet, target's draft is 15 feet. Perhaps the rough seas played a part, unsure.

A fire is observed on the deck of the small tanker, yet she steams on.

0926
Tube 1 reloaded in 8 minutes, the boys are working hard for this one. Maneuvering into position for a second attack

0938
Target seems to have put out the deck fire and is constant helming in a WNW course. Tube 1 fired from ~600 yards.

Torpedo impact

0938-0957
Target continues WNW at reduced speed, approx. 4 knots. Maneuvering for third attack, will soon consider surface engagement to conserve torpedoes.
0958
Sixth and final torpedo fired at this target results in our 3rd hit. XO Reed cautioned our torpedo would not have enough distance to arm as we closed to under 500 yards. We were close enough to hear the screams as she went down.

That should do it.

0958xx
Secured from General quarters.
1000
Surfaced and looked over our kill for survivors.

After the third and final hit, the tanker sunk in a little under 3 minutes. Total time to sink after first torpedo hit, 40 minutes. No survivors were observed

1005
Long. 120 30E, Lat. 12 34N, 6 torpedoes left, 1 small tanker sunk, approx 1500 tons, resuming course to the Bashi Channel.
