I was looking through some DVDs and came across the Jimi Hendrix Live at Monterey DVD. I watched it and, when it came to his performance of Hey Joe, I was reminded of how so many performers have covered this song; it is almost as ubiquitous as Louie, Louie and is almost a rite of passage for garage bands everywhere. Most of those my age were probably first exposed to the Leaves' version of the song:

The song was written by a folkie musician named Billy Roberts; I had heard his acoustic original version way back in the early sixties and I really haven't heard his version since then; it was a pleasant surprise to hear just how good the original really was, how good a guitarist Roberts was, and just how closely Hendrix followed Roberts' original arrangement:

Sometimes, it really is worth the effort to go back and find the source of music one enjoys...

I'm just going to leave a bit of a musician I've been listening to to lately and. probably, someone few people have ever heard of:
