This sounds a lot like "The Triton Ultimatum" which I read in 1988. I was studying abroad but passed the time reading used books. There was a stretch of a few months where I read only submarine books - Das Boot, Dust on the Sea, Pivot, fact or fiction (I first learned of the The Jennifer Project at about that time) - many of which I don't even remember by name. Triton was good escapist fun, but it had few surprises. Basically a bunch of guys with a vendetta and SSBN experience hijack an SSBN. The reviews for the book of this thread seem promising enough though, I may even give it a try.
