Could use some advice re CPU temp

Does anyone know of an accurate system temp monitor software?

I was taking a look this morning at the Abit mobo utility for my new mobo and figured out that the temp monitoring was disabled. I went into the settings and clicked to enable CPU temp display, applied and exited settings. Then I saw to my horror that the CPU temp was being logged as 129 deg C! Shortly after, the system shut down, 'cause I figure the utlity triggered auto shutdown. I reboted and went back in and disabled the temp monitor so it doesn't shutdown.

I did a quick search and installed SpeedFan. It shows temps as normal, although the CPU temp it shows is kind of strange 'cause it shows it as 0deg, sometimes -1. The symbol shows either a tick or a down arrow (which I think shows it running even cooler than typical).

I'm a little comforted by SpeedFan, but I'm not necessarily believing that SpeedFan is accurate. I do think that the Abit utility is wrong (mainly 'cause I'm thinking the system would have blown up if the temp had really been 129 deg ... and this was at rest).

So can anyone recommend a good system temp monitor?

BTW, before all of this, I did fiddle with the BIOS on my new rig this morning (remind me not to do this just before having to go to work

). I noticed that CPU operating speed was showing as "user defined". Curious (another reminder not to be so curious) I looked at it and it showed the option for user defined (which I imagine is probably so you can overclock ... I am not overclocked btw) and the second option was 3000Mhz for default processor speed. So I selected the default.

I was thinking at first maybe this had messed things up temp-wise, but I don't think so.

I use Mobile Meter, it's specialised for laptops though. Might be worth a shot.

Get Everest. Free download, just google it. It is a great tool and will tell you everything about your computer.....even temps. I have found speedfan was reading temps incorrectly on my board.

edit/add: looks like Everest has gone payware, but I'll certainly try it on 30-day trial.

Everest Home is still available as a free download, but it isnt supported by the company anymore so it wont recognize the latest hardware. Anyway IF you are on a Pentium 4 then 129C wouldnt kill the chip, but system shutdown would happen.

Sounds like you are reading the wrong field. There are at least 5 sensors on your MB, and one will always show something weird since I've never seen a temp monitor read it right.

Yup, I have a hard time thinking it's really 129 deg. I'll take a look at it with Everest trial this evening. Tks.

The nice thing about a hot system is that you must not raise from the table and get into the kitchen when you become hungry. Simply break an egg on top of your machine. That way you also must not smell the melting plastic and cables anymore.

CoreTemp works well if all you need is information on your CPU's temperature. However, software monitors are not always accurate, so make sure that you are using a couple of programs to determine the real temperature.

I recommend SpeedFan. It helped me to monitor temps but also set the speeds for the fans. The fan on my mobo broke, took me ages to understand what was going on.

Looks to be around 40 deg and a bit, ignoring SpeedFan which makes no sense, and tossing out the low and this morning's 129 from the Abit utility, which AFAIK is ok.

Of course I should never have started the whole thing, ... ignorance is bliss, if it ain't broke don't fix it etc etc ... and now I find I'm thinking 40 is a bit high at rest, oughta be in the 30's. If it's at all accurate, anyway. ... and maybe it's not, maybe it really is 129 and about to blow up. Paranoia sets in and before you know it they're carting me away wearing a funny white jacket.
