Default Cold Waters Worth It?

I'm a big fan of Dangerous Waters and most of the Silent Hunter series. I was thinking of getting Cold Waters but I've heard so much contradictory info on it.

Some people seem to love it, or hate it, and those that love it seem to have began to dislike parts of it.

So, is it worth getting and trying? How is it doing after release?

In my humble opinion...YES GET IT

It has great support, constant updating, and lots of great mod makers......

Like you said, not everyone likes it. Whether you will like it will depend on whether the developer's description of the game matches your taste. I can say the game matches the developer's description. It is not however, Dangerous Waters or Silent Hunter (any of them.) It's more like Red Storm Rising.

I think those who do not like it didn't fully understand what the game was about and after trying it decided their misconception didn't match the actual game play.

Since you decided to fact find other opinions, it likely means you are undecided and have a budget. I suggest you watch the many videos available on youtube and other sources which give a pretty accurate demonstration of other player's first impressions of the game.

Other considerations:
1) The game is aggressively supported by the developer. This means the game is evolving. New features added, original features refined. It also means if the player chooses to participate in optional beta releases, the game could go belly up unpredictably at times.
2) The developer actively supports modding and has provided editable text files controlling many of the game's features. The game is new, the mod interface under development and the mod community in early learning. This means mods break with new game features and updates and the mods currently available (and yet soon to come) are experimental and often under rapid development and release cycles.

Know what you are getting and you'll make the right choice.

I bought the game when it was first released on Steam but I got bored because I did not know how to play. After watching Jive Turkey's tutorial which explains a lot on how to play CW (especially coming from SH5), this sparked my interest in the game. Please watch and support Jive turkey because not only is he part of the subsim community he is also a great streamer and knows a lot about CW and Submarines in general.

I bought SH5 on sale for $5 years ago, paid full price for CW. If you're into sub combat sims, it's worth it just for the active-homing wire-guided torpedoes. **** all the math of intercepting a target, just put a Mk48 down the approximate bearing of a contact and it'll hit. And if they juke it, you can steer it into them.

While I don't love it, I think it's pretty good. If you haven't already, check out some of the YouTube playthroughs. I'd recommend the vids by Jive Turkey. They convinced me to buy it and I've no regrets.

Since this is my first post ever, I'd like to greet everyone and thank the operators for this unbelievably amazing forum!

Now to the matter at hand... I'm an on/off SH3 player for quite some time now and I love the simulation aspect of it. That been said, I realised that I haven't got the slightest clue about modern submarine warfare. So I went out on a patrol to the Great Web Sea to find my self a target. Thus I stumbled upon CW.
The game looks fine and is encouraging enough the fact that sub sim games are actually been made in 2017, set aside contemporary mods to older games.
What threw me off, however, is the all-seeing overview exterior camera and the fact that I haven't yet seen anyone playing without the almighty God's eye and no in any other one. Which brings me to the conclusion that there is no interior view or any other similar that would make me feel that I am actually IN a submarine with it's limitations of external awareness, apart from the sensor's representations available in the instruments.
The game shall remain in my wishlist, of course, and with a firing solution in my TDC readily available for it. But since I lack the means of investigating further the game, I would like anyone's expert opinion on how to make the game more of a simulation.
And in this spot, please accept my apologies for the long post, although there are more things to be said...

Thank you all for your patience and Happy Hunting.

The idea of CW is really to simulate being in command of a submarine instead of simulating each station. It's your job as the skipper to say where the boat goes, how fast, and how it deploys its weapons against what target. You don't have to sit for hours at a time with a set of headphones on listening to the sounds of the ocean in hopes of hearing, say, the cooling pump noise of a Victor-III or the whap-whap-whap sound of a Sierra's screw so that you can count blades and derive how fast it's going. As the captain, someone does that for you. Yes, there is some manual control of the helm and the torpedoes optional, but that's a necessary element if you are to have precise control over where your Mk. 37 strikes a target to do maximum damage or play mongoose with enemy torpedoes.

If you are looking to take away some of the all-seeing awareness, the first things you can do are to uncheck the event camera option and select to only render enemy units after reaching a certain solution percentage (I think it's 75% or so). Both of these certainly can add to the challenge. Torpedoes can seem to come out of nowhere. A boomer you've been tracking can perform a Crazy Ivan, rush past you, disappear into your baffles as you turn, and never be seen or heard from again.

I am noticing that my torpedoes don't "show" a target unless I activate the torpedo's on-board active sonar search. I am glad for that.

I know that if the torpedo's active sonar goes active, all in the AO can hear it. But, if I can get a couple hits in before the enemy units start running away, I get a jump on them. Keeping the torpedo on the other side of the layer helps, too. But, then I have to be concerned with having an accurate fix so I can pop up the torpedo at the target in a passive mode.

Lots of variables...

Thanks for the reply, Swordsman422! Greatly appreciate it.

All you are saying are well understood and accepted. Being a ship officer my self in real life, I greatly appreciate my crew doing their jobs so I can do mine in the follow up.
My concern wasn't so much on manning a particular station as in SH, for example, but rather to have a view other than an external camera. A chart display, for example. Anything other than seeing my sub from the outside and maneuvering to avoid incoming weapons without actually seeing them coming through the camera.
Since I haven't seen anyone using any other view than the external one, my question was if the game gives me the ability to choose not to see the external camera at all.
Please accept my apology if I wasn't clear in the initial post and thank you once more! [emoji2]

Oh. Sorry. I misunderstood.

Yeah, you can actually go into an enlarged tactical map screen and play entirely from there, though manual helm control and torpedo wire guidance might be best accomplished from the 3D window.

Simple answer. People that stream CW will always use the god's view as it makes the video look more exciting and help pull in viewers. This question was actually answered by one of the most popular CW streamer Jive Turkey.
