It looks to me like an oil filter. It is probably bolted directly onto the engine and the lubricating oil is pumped directly through it. Very much like the one that screws onto your car's engine, and I'm pretty sure that it is mounted to make its own connection. So it's probably perfect just like it is.

I bet that filter is supposed to have a housing over it. Seems like the screen would have oil pumped through it.

I'm willing to bet the airfilter is much like what Tomi has here. Old time filters were wire mesh on the outside with paper filament on the inside of the mesh. A lot of filters today are constructed the same way. One exception, there are housings around them as you see on cars, etc. The Torsk filters look like this but do have a housing with the end cap open about 5 or more inches that you can see the wire meshing and filament filter papers. These hook to the intake tube and finally meet the induction ports.

In the really poorly drawn red circles are the filters for the engines. They are exactly like Tomi's but are connected to a intake pipe as this engine was opposing cylinders and the intake was down the side of the engine were Tomi's is on the top. I would not do a thing with the filter Tomi. I'm guessing it hooked to a pipe off the intake and pulled air from the surrounding cabin.

Air filter/wire mesh:

If anything, the engine would have a sump were filters like this were put into the pan. Mercedes were famous for that and I believe they still use this sump type filter today.

Mercedes oil filter that fits in the oil pan/sump:

Again, Tomi, I would leave your air filter alone. It gets the air from the open hatches and surrounding cabin air.

[das boot]I can almost hear the chief mechanic telling the captain that one of the engines is off the mount, and the captain telling him to keep going! [/das boot]
