Default Major Malfunction

I've had a major fault the last two times I've run SH4. Causes a video card error of some sort, and SH4 to stop working. I finally went into the Eventvwr and found this

"Faulting application name: sh4.exe, version: 1.5.0.0, time stamp: 0x476a5ca9
Faulting module name: sh4.exe, version: 1.5.0.0, time stamp: 0x476a5ca9
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x0017fa3f
Faulting process id: 0x122c
Faulting application start time: 0x01cd3dea4e2f699c
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft1\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\sh4.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft1\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\sh4.exe
Report Id: 80d9da43-a9e2-11e1-b40a-6c626d4120c5"

Any ideas?

And this morning I got a C++ error

"Faulting application name: spoolsv.exe, version: 6.1.7600.16661, time stamp: 0x4c6f61fe
Faulting module name: msvcrt.dll, version: 7.0.7600.16930, time stamp: 0x4eeb01e3
Exception code: 0x40000015
Fault offset: 0x000000000002aa3e
Faulting process id: 0x59c
Faulting application start time: 0x01cd3df157a6582c
Faulting application path: C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\msvcrt.dll
Report Id: 8b80c3bb-aa63-11e1-8650-6c626d4120c5"

I know spoolsv.exe CAN be a virus, but nothing comes up on scan. Could AVG Free be missing it?

Thanks!

I can't help with your crashing, but I can say with certainty is that any antivirus program can miss the bad stuff. Even if you had every latest AV product under the sun something could get by unnoticed. Most exe stuff can be a virus, but take heart in the fact that most of them are not. Chance is on your side that it's harmless.

Maybe sys spec and mod list could help people identify the issue.

What OS?

It's never a good idea to install games to the default folder (under Vista/Win7).

Tried running without mods? Did it work before?

It worked up until last week, really. Then again, I took about a month or two break from the sim, so...

Seems to only happen during time compress.

Mods are TMO 2.2, RSRDC (but it happened before I put it in), smaller seabed plants, smaller seabed rocks, and AA light damage mod for TMO

Sounds familiar, did you try posting in the SH4 Mods section?
Do any other applications have problems?

Nope, I mean, I did a long time ago, but that was a different issue on a different computer and different OS

Only other application that has issues is FSX.

Since the issue only started recently with the one game (FSX might not be related) I'd say that it is a SH4 issue, maybe your game save is corrupt, pity you don't have a backup of your SH4 install, I assume you don't use Norton Ghost?

If its crashing only during time compression - which screen are you in?

Map, deck, etc
?

Check your vid card temps. Disable any mods and test it. Then add them in one at a time to see what hoses.

Usually periscope. Seems only to happen when I'm attacking.

If the save game is corrupt, this would be the second time in 3 weeks... And it would make sense that it always happens in the same area. I've never had it on the way to the harbor I'm supposed to attack.

The SH series has had the corrupt save bug since SH3. If you have ships nearby, you don't save the game. If you are not on the surface, you don't save the game. Being underwater or having the enemy close often results in a corrupt save.

But there is a difference between a corrupt save and an app crash.
You need to go mod by mod and see which one causes the issue.
