Default Windows 7 problems

I recently upgraded my desktop PC & bought a new one with Windows 7 home premium.

Previously I had run my SH4 on Windows XP but it now won't load onto the Windows 7.
It shows the disc in the CD/DVD drive but when I click on Setup I get the message that the file is not a valid Win32 application. I get the same message when I click on SH4Autorun.exe.

Anybody have a solution for this problem?

Welcome to Subsim, Bos'n Bachers. Happy to have you aboard.

If SH4 won't install automatically, try going into the game folder on the disk and install it manually.

That's what I'm saying - it didn't load automatically so I went to D drive (my dvd drive) & tried to load it manually but only get the message 'not a valid Win32 application.
I fear I am sunk without trace!

Welcome aboard, Bos'n Bachers!

This is perplexing, but something that should be solvable. I'm running Win7 Pro and have never encountered this with SH4. Please describe the process you used when you "...tried to load it manually".

Did you go to Start, Run, and select Setup.exe?

I needed an absolute clean install of SH4 yesterday to continue testing a new mod, so I uninstalled using the Installer, deleted the SH4 folder from My Documents, searched for and deleted any files mentioning SH4, and did the same for the Registry using RegEdit (not recommended for the faint of heart). When I was satisfied there were no detectable references anywhere in my system for the keyword "SH4", I rebooted and started over.

I loaded the CD and let Autorun bring up the menu. Clicked on Install, and changed the default directory to C:\Games\Ubisoft\Silent_Hunter_IV. It ran fine, and when it ended I applied the patch to bring it to v1.4, and then added the patch for v1.5, the U-Boat missions. I then had to install JSGME in the game's base directory to add the mod I wanted to test.

All this to say that if your machine is in good shape SH4 should load from the CD everytime. If Autorun doesn't start, then you should be able to force an install by going to Start, then browsing to and selecting the CD on your "D" drive, and then clicking on Setup.exe. Let us know if it works.

Good luck!

You need to install it to C Drive, or whatever is your main drive, rather than installing it to C: X86 Program files blah blah.
Like this:

C: Ubisoft/Silent Hunter 4

There's an option at the beginning of the install to change the install folder.

Its a different install location for Windows 7.

You can install SH4 on any drive.
It is also Windows 10 friendly without the need of a compatibility mode.
