Hey, thanks for the help Swoop, forgot to mention that I'd done what you suggested and it does work, however I have the problem then that if I try to load 3D view the game crashes, and that the icons on the map flicker and dissappear and soon after the game crashes. I can only run the game in the sub stations ie sonar, TMA, etc.

Since my last post (ages back, I'm in the military and have not had net access for some time) I bought an Nvidia 6600GT, but I'm still having the same problem.

Any ideas? Tempted to just go and buy DW but it will be a lengthy wait to get it and I've already got enough to distract me from course!

I Have the same problems running XP Spack 2 and Sub command it could be video card related. I am running a Nvidia Gforce FX 5200 256 meg ram(PCI Version) I cant get it to load up in SC.

My fix.
Bought Dangerous Waters. It runs fine. :|\

XP SP2 and GeForce Go 5200 64Mb RAM on a laptop ... SC and SCX worked fine. But I did need to tweak things a little, since the game wouldn't simply minimize so that I could go back to the desktop while playing.

Could you do a right click on the game executable and select "Run as" and Windows 2k rather than XP for example and check what happens ?

Just tried it then, made no difference. Same for Win 98.

When I hit the windows button on my keyboard and went out to desktop (alt tab wouldnt work) I CTRL-ALT-DEL and Sub command was not responding.

NO idea...

I had to wait a good five minutes for the training scenarios to load and for the damn 3-D options screen to pop-up. Wild considering my current cpu must be 8-10 times faster than the one I had when SC was first released....

I had the same problems until I downloaded the latest NVidia drivers last night. Now SC works perfectly again. Give it a try.

Downloaded latest NVidia drivers, still no luck.

Really odd.

Works like a charm on my friends machine, same vid card, same XP. The game used to work fine...

Had similar and used Regedit to clear all references to EA, SC and patch I think some linger past an uninstall
- then SC 1.8 worked fine.

Another 'occurence' (DW Tho.) was a 'security' issue. The game wouldnt go into 3D. A piece of security
software was blocking progress - I removed the SS** and the game - reinstalled the game and with it in situ
reinstalled SS which found the game 'home' and friendly. All OK.

Yeah regedit might fix this. I've got a mate who has a reg cleaner, he suggested it two days ago, I thought it was a rather obscure suggestion but I will give it a go.

In previos post I mentioned that the new NVidia drivers solved the problems I was having with SC. SC worked fine after I downloaded drivers, but next day same old problems re-occurred. Then I realized I had shut off virus protection when I had installed the new drivers. Sure enough SC works for me now when I shut off my virus protection program (SBC Yahoo On-line Protection). When I have the anti-virus on and run SC I get the excruciatingly long load times and system hang-up when accessing 3D Options menu. With the anti-virus off those problems did not occur for me.

If I remember correctly, SC uses .mdb files and accesses same during start up. Virus Protection sees this as virus like activity and gets in the way. I would turn off real time protection while playing and you should be fine.

Try running the game in windowed mode (desktop color depth must be set to 16-bit)...

Edit your shortcut to look like this:

Target: "C:\GAMES\Sub Command\subcommand.exe" -windowed

NOTE: Make sure the -windowed is outside of the quotes
