From another thread about systems and graphic cards...
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=101690

My system:
High Performance Core 2 Duo E6600, 2.40 GHz
Chieftec LCX-01 Workstation
LC-POWER 550W, 120mm, 14 dB
ASUS P5B Deluxe, P965, DDR2/GLAN/RAID/1394a/WiFi motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 2.40 GHz / 1066 MHz, 4 MB
Kingston HyperX DDR2, 800 MHz CL4, 2x 1 GB
ASUS EN8800GTS TOP/HTDP/512M
Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Gamer
2 * Maxtor DM 21, 250 GB, 7200 rpm, 16 MB, SATA II
Lite-On SHM-165P6S DVD Writer, 16x DL
Lite-On DVD-ROM, 16/48x, bulk
Multi Reader 15-i-1, intern, USB 2.0
1.44 MB floppydrive
Standard Cooler, 120x120x25, 26 dBA
Logitech MX1000 Laser Cordless Mouse
D-Link DI-624 108Mbit Wireless Gateway
ViewSonic 19" LCD 1280*1024 max

I used to have a BFG 1gb video card IIRC, but it broke down, and my usual pc shop didn't have another 1gb video cards at the time (March 2009). But they explained me that that having the extra 512mb wouldn't really render much better graphics. The GPU is of greater importance. So even though, my video ram was half of what I had before, the speed of the GPU was increased.

2 3/4 year old rig:
ASUS P5W DH Deluxe
E6600 (2x 2.4GHz)
4GB mem
XFX 8800 GTX XXX 768MB (O.C. version with 630MHz CoreSpeed)
2x Super Talent Ultradrive GX 128GB in RAID0 for OS and some games (@Racerboy: In comparison WD VelociRaptors are extremly slow and extremly LOUD)
Windows Vista 64 Ultimate (SH3+SH4 work without any problem)

As long as I can play every blockbuster game with max. details with the displays native resolution (1280x1024, it´s a 19" touchscreen) with at least 25fps (slowest fps with Crysis is 27) I won´t upgrade anything. Besides, I´ll wait for the next generation of Nvidia cards. The 300 series will hit market soon.

I have a 1GB HD5870, they are pretty cheap now so I will probably get a second and set up Crossfire.

There's no point me adding my stats but FWIW, 512 would be the best option.

Perhaps you could answer this for me - will SLI or Crossfire be of any benefit to SH5, are you supporting it?

SLI or Crossfire is almost always of benefit and it´s not an implementation issue. So SH5, as every other graphical application too, will automatically support it.

As far as I know, double-card technologies on both the nVidia or ATI front, are complicated to implement in the engine. My impression has been (in the Subsim meet) that they won't be implemented because of the complication of having to program them at the native level.

Cheers

Hmm, that's what I was assuming. Can maerean_m confirm that please.

Not overly worried as one of my cards will be enough but had a bit of spare cash and was thinking about an extra card.

82.22% of voters state they have 512MB or more of graphics RAM, so I'd say that's the direction to be taken with the sim's development.

I've managed to vote wrongly in the poll which is a bit laughable, but I have a Radeon X550 - 256MB.
