A truly great actor in the full sense of the word; the fact he won two Tony Awards speaks volumes about his skills as an actor; you can always retake a scene in movies or TV, but you only get one shot each performance to get it right and make your mark; he was a well-respected Shakespearean actor; for most people, he was someone they saw on TV or in films, but those appearances just barely scratched the surface of his abilities...

I saw him most recently last year in several episodes of the TV series Blacklist and he was, even in older age, still a force on screen; I think a role he played in a TV movie, To catch a Killer, was one which showcased his abilities for nuance and absorption in a character; his depiction of serial killer John Wayne Gacy is still one of the most chilling characterizations of all time...

RIP, Mr Dennehy...

He was always good... underrated or under-used maybe. His most memorable film for me was the oddly titled "The Belly of an Architect", although it was a disturbing piece

Indeed, I watch it only once, in a class, during my university years. I didn't knew the film, but knew the actor and was "oh, it's him, didn't know he do indie films", but after I thought he did a great role and film.

Brian Dennehy always had such a commanding presence in films. Brian was convincing as Sheriff Will Teasel opposite Sylvester Stallone in Rambo. I also liked his performances in Semi Tough with Burt Reynolds, The man from Snowy River and Presumed Innocent with Harrison Ford and in Gorky Park.

Rest in Peace.

Dennehy's portrayal of killer John Wayne Gacy is indeed chilling; the scenes where he is taunting police officers while in full clown getup are some of the most surreally disturbing ever put on film and Dennehy hit just the right amount of menace and evil without turning the portrayal into a caricature; Dennehy was nominated for an Emmy Award for the role, but unfortunately lost; it should be noted, the same year saw him also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for another TV film he appeared in, a not too shabby achievement for any actor to win two nominations for two separate role in two separate projects...

Looking at his career, I wonder if his film and TV work was solely a means of supporting his stage career; many actors, particularly those in strong live stage theater cities like New York, take TV or film roles for the larger paychecks as a means of allowing themselves the luxury of pursuing live stage roles. The actor Richard Jordan used to take TV and film roles to secure the money for his stage work and to support a theater group he had founded; his income from TV and film also gave him the freedom to write, produce and direct stage projects across the US; Dennehy, likewise, had much more of a presence in the live theater world, and found greater recognition in the theater...
