Fall 1944
German air offensive attempts to blunt allied advance
7 Russian AAF eliminated for 4 German - germany pays 12 brps for limited offensive ops 5 RAF eliminated for 4 German (including 1 jet) - germany pays 10 brps for limited ops Battle of the Atlantic The U-boats still cause more problems for the allies than the allies had hoped by this stage. 14 U-boats at -1 mod roll a 2! 2/6 result 20 ASW at +1 roll 3! a 4/9 result 19 transports remain in the atlantic Germany attritions the Russians. Germany gets a 7C/4H result A mighty attrition significantly rolls back the previous Russian offensive and restores supply to all the beleaguered units in Warsaw

Air Strikes Over Rabaul
8 AAF attack Rabaul carrier based air in rabaul contribute to the defense resulting in the allies being outnumbered Nonetheless, the allied air delivers a stunning performance leaving the japanese air badly battered despite the greater Japanese numbers. However allied losses are also very great US loses 14 AAS (rounded to 5 AAF) Japan loses 4 AAS (rounded to 1 AAF), 4 NAS and 3 eNAS The allies sally out for a second round of combat, delivering another stunning performance in a desperate battle that left the American AAF obliterated as a fighting force, and many pilots being picked up by submarines - including a future US president! Whodathunk it! For this Japan lost another 2 AAS, 2 eNAS and 1 NAS Total losses for the US: 8 AAF Total losses for Japan: 2 AAF, 2 more inverted, 5NAS, 5 eNAS After the srikes were over, a large USN force of two Task Forces went on a patrol to the Eastern tip of New Guinea along with 2 submarine factors 24 NAS from the two carrier Task Forces patrolling off New Guinea, strike Rabaul The badly beaten but alerted Japanese air defenses engage the attackers in another round of air battles similar in proportion to the first 22 Japanese air squadrons defend against the 24 attacking Americans The US luck has cooled a bit since the earlier strikes, getting a total of 7/8 But the exhausted Japanese pilots do no better getting also 7/8 The US planes face the air defenses at level 10! 3 NAS get shot down 6 US NAS get through all the defenses and 3 each target the CV3 Zuikaku and CV3 Hiryu at +2 mod for srikes on flattops Zuikaku takes 3 hits and settles on the bottom of the harbour Hiryu also takes 3 hits and capsizes Japanese engineers consider the Zuikaku to be salvageable The US Task Forces send a second strike 14 NAS fly out and are engaged by 15 defending Japanese squadrons US shoots gets a 6/6 result Japan gets a 5/7 result 2 NAS get through to face the air defenses and are shot down No third strike is launched At the end of the battle a significant percentage of both Japanese and US NAS have been lost, including many veteran Japanese eNAS

Invasion of Lae
10 infantry factors crossed the Kokoda trail to simultaneously hit the japanese defenses from the landward side as the US marines make a landing from the North assisted by the combined shore bombardment of three Task Forces The attack was at 3:1 and Japanese resistance was tough, and pows were few, but Lae is finally in US hands. Allies lost 6 factors, mostly from the battles in the jungle from the landward side with heavy losses among South African and Australian as well as US troops The Japanese forces declined to attempt a rescue

The Allies capture the last of the Channel submarine bases
Germany shifts center of U-boat operations to Bergen German high seas fleet evacuates Lorient and is intercepted as it rounds Brest by the British TF2. British CA6 fire on German CA2 at -1, but that German commander still gets his laughs in, the british do no damage, the German CA2 damages a British cruiser 17 British factors focus their fire with the express orders to "Sink the Bismarck!" "There's something wrong with our ships today" laments the British admiral - another poor result and the Bismarck slips into a smokescreen, although the return fire did also do no damage British submarines have join in in the attack and by great good fortune, HMS turbulent has a perfect angle on the Bismarck as she steams away from the battle. Firing a full salvo of 10 torpedoes, Bismarck is hit 5 times! (a 10 is rolled, +1 mod) The damage is fatal and the Bismarck sinks - the rest of the German fleet scatters into the Atlantic Bad weather helps them in their escape and they eventually regroup in Bergen

Allied assault on the Paris-Vichy line on O21
Allies assault the defensive positions on O21, defense is 3-3, 4o6=14, with 5o6,5o6,1m3,1m3, 3-4,3-4, 10 AAF at 2:1 rolling a 2! A dreadful 14 factors are lost in the attack, but it is successful! 4 armoured units exploit attack P41, defense 6 with 3 AAF at 3:1, also rolling a 2! Another bloody result By the end of fall, allied ground units can see Paris in the distance

Operation Most
Russia shifts the focus of operations to the South as General Raptov considers the north too strongly defended, while the South presents vulnerable points. Proceeded by air attacks, the Russians launch attacks across the Carpathians and into Moldova. The Rumanians, now defending their homeland, eventually succumb after a fearsome battle leaving thousands of Soviet soldiers dead (a 1 followed by 2 result on a 2:1 battle) , but the attack across the mountains in southern Poland is successful with only moderate Russian casualties (a 4 result at 2:1) Armoured units then proceeded to exploit out of the breakthrough into Hungary and Rumania in an attempt to knock out two of Germany's key allies.
