Default New PC Advice

I've been given the go ahead to spend ~$800 on a new PC after about twenty minutes of reasoning with that woman I live with . So I've been shopping around Newegg. I figure I'll wait until after Christmas for the sales. Any suggestions?

I was thinking about something like this:

In the same boat myself.

My main rig (if you can call it that :rotfl went up in a cloud of smoke and sparks 2 nights ago.

Just ordered a newie, with Intel quad core 2.8, 4 gigs of 1066 RAM, 500gig HDD, but settled on a 1 Gig DDR3 9800GT video card. (couldn't justify the extra $600) Just need to decide on an OS.

It all depends on what you are going to use your pc for. If your going to use it for general gaming, that pc is fine.

A pretty good box for the money all things considered. You may want to check the mb to see what kind of upgrading you can do later as needed - but should be more than enough box for quite some time.

I have found over the years that not all of my hardware needed upgrading...the first few comps I went though I mearly upgraded my VC.
The system I have now, I built for the main reason (gaming) I will only have to upgrade a VC or ram for the next year or more...
you fellas need to think about this...you dont really need to keep upgrading you MB, VC, processors, and ram if you get a stable platform from which to build from...
You gotta remember the latest and greatest will have something to up it in the next few months...

PD, the second choice would probably be better if you have resource intense games. SH3 and SH4 being in that realm. Plus you have a second PCI-E slot if you decide to add a second 9800 and run SLI. So for what you are paying you are getting more bang for your buck.

And a bigger PS which I figure will make it more upgradable, and twice as much RAM. I've never had an AMD processor before, but I have read good things about the Phenom X4 9950. I don't know if the gaming case is just flash or not, but it looks cool. I do want to play Black Shark sooner or later, so I think I'll spend the extra money.

Hi PD Merry Xmas

For a grand and change you can't go wrong.

There is always something that maybe, could be better . But it's like chasing your tail.

When is enough good enough ?

That second rig looks like it has all the enchiladas.

Before you made the decision to buy consider some things.

#1 Can I trickle update it over the years without breaking the future bank?

#2 Can I hold over with Linux until Windows 7 comes out?

#3 What size do I want?

If you can get away with it. MicroATX seems to be the norm for Value in Mobos. The only major difference is only a single PCie slot as compared to 2 or 3 on some ATX boards. But their cost skyrockets.

Also The 2 big players in graphics are starting to incorporate serious onboard graphics with the ability to SLI or Crossfire with the card in the PCIe slot.

So here's what I ended up with. I did a custom desktop build with www.cyberpowerpc.com .

-CoolerMaster Centurion 590 RC-590 Mid-Tower, extra case fan
-Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16 GHz
-GigaByte GA-EP45T-DS3R Intel P45 Express CrossFireX Chipset LGA775 FSB1600 DDR3/1600 Mainboard w/GbLAN,USB2.0,IEEE1394a,&7.1Audio
-Thermaltake V1 Gaming CPU Cooling Fan
- 4GB (2x2GB) PC1333 DDR3 PC3 10666 Dual Channel Memory [+72] (Corsair or Major Brand)
- ATI 4850 512MB
- SE Audigy Soundcard
- 680 watt power supply
- 120 watt speakers (I use headphones most of the time, so not that important)
- 500 GB HD
- 2 DVD RWs

I also get a free copy of FSX deluxe, a T-shirt, and something that sounds like one of those emo messenger bags. Yippy!

Spent $805 on the box, $65 in shipping fees. Awesome price point IMO. Can't wait for it to get here. I'll finally be able to play SHIV without cranking everything down and hoping for 25 fps.

I'm moving up from:
Dell PIV 2.8 GHz Dual Core
2 GB RAM (Started with 1GB)
2600XT (Started with a 7600GT)
1 CDRW/DVD ROM and another DVD ROM

I'm sticking with my older 21 inch Dell LCD Monitor for now. It's limited to 1280x1024, but I'll be able to live with that for a few more months when I pick up a new monitor.

PD
