Default Arrghhh! Underpowered S-class!

Been playing this for a month and hadnt come across a carrier yet. I had started on the larger subs (i know, im a noob!) but all this talk of sugar got me interested so went back to earlier in the war to take an S class for a run. Well 4 days out to sea and i had one merchant which i didnt even bother wasting a torp on, just gunned him down. Then the most frustrating thing ever as i entered the Celebes...

About midnight, calmish seas, no moon. sailing north and pick up a radio message of a task force ahead. Looked good to approach so on i went and started picking out contacts, the fringe escort destroyers. I thought i had a good approach in the darkness so headed for the centre. There certainly appeared to be a lot of activity, i was peering into my binos very hard on the bridge, trying to stop the glare from the intruments on my huge monitor but what i began to make out was just huge...

First one carrier, then another, then I realised 2 more carrier escorts, all surrounded by at least 3 cruisers i could make out and other large ships. I was coming in abeam and thought now would be an excellent place to save game so i did. I continued my approach, getting to within 3nm of the escorts when i was doing some quick maths and i realised something was badly wrong.

Having been salivating over the 2 Hiryu's so much i had misinterpreted their size and consequently their distance away. The taskforce was doing a good 12 knots and i was hopelessly short on the approach, they were 30 degrees to starboard and the angle was closing too fast! The nearest carrier was over 5nm away. In addition the two escorts were dangerously close! This was the most tantalising picture that i could never have!
Lead Hiryu here at 5.5nm, either side an escort carrier, 2nd carrier off to the right. Both escorts out of view left and right at about 2-3nm.

I've replayed that save game about 5 times now and there is nothing, absolutely nothing i could do to ever get a shot off at one, whatever approach i use. The S-boat does about as much on the surface as it does underwater and with a pitiful 8 torps total i felt completely useless. 9 knots closure at flank and i get picked up every time trying to even grab a cruiser at the back. At full speed shadowing i gave up the next morning when to add insult to injury i was mercilessly attacked by wave on wave of aircraft coming from their last known direction.

In conclusion, I never found the S boats to dive very much faster, they have reasonable underwater but pitiful surface speeds, and four tubes and 8 total torps is a waste of time! I'm getting out of it ASAP!

Hi there

I was wondering, if someone could make a nice SH4 calendar for use as wimdows wallpaper. Anyone?

There are nice wallpaper calendars on simhq, with aircraft and cars, maybe sub ones could also be cool

Regards

Maciej

LV, to bad this could not be modelled better, but has been discussed in the past and does not seem possible.

Usualy when you only see the links you have to put after the link.

like..
(The hole stuff must be written without spaces)
