Has something to do with this, but is no part of the plane or directly related to the object.

^ No. A distant connection, but has nothing to do with the plane as an apparatus or any equipment of it.

^ no.

edit hint: what you are looking for was built after WW1, the connection to the photo is one of the persons in front of the plane.
edit hint 2: It is the person on the left, and he held a record in 1913 (if not for long)

a bit too modern. And the thing in question is not a plane.

Is the upper part a 'spat' covering a wheel then?

@bracer: A motorbike? Yes. But which one/who built it?

@Eichhörnchen: A spat? Never heard of this word other than from spitting
If you mean a kind of fender or mudguard, then yes ! And below it the wheel.

Hint 3: The man who built it was a german aviation pioneer who held several records before the war (WW1), if not related to motorbikes. One of the first holding a pilot's license, constructing own plane types if with varying results, forbidden to fly in the military in WW1 because being regarded as "too valuable", but teaching others tricks and how to become pilots, and flying prototypes for evaluation.
And completely forgotten..
