Dowly has it, yes the Supermarine Nighthawk, built to hunt high-flying Zeppelins but being barely able to take off. Maybe the developers thought it a good idea to put a fourth wing on it for a faster ascend and intercept, but with all this drag and undersized engines this was not a good idea. It would no climb very high, and a Zeppelin would have been able to just run away. One of the prototypes crashed, and the project was abandoned in 1917.
When a Mr. Mitchell joined the Supermarine company in 1917, he sure had a look at this Nighthawk, and obviously learned from it.. with the design of the S.6B he brought the Schneider trophy to England, in 1931. Based on this racing plane he later developed an even better plane, the iconic 'Spitfire'. Here is some history about the 'Nighthawk' with some nice photos, despite the somehow unfitting name ('motorpunk'): http://www.motorpunk.co.uk/features/...-and-insanity/ http://www.wikiwand.com/en/Supermarine_Nighthawk Over to Dowly
