A number from a Los Angeles '60s group way ahead of its time:

This song was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David; yes the same guys that wrote all those mainstream hits for people like Perry Como. However, Arthur Lee & love's version was really different from the original:

I always found these two versions interesting; it was common practice in the 50s and 60s to take a rock or R&B song and 'normalize' it to fit Top 40 or TV show audiences; this is why you would find someone like Pat Boone doing covers of Little Richard or Chuck Berry. The covers almost always featured some sort of orchestrated backing and some degree of schmaltz for the Mom & Pop set. This song, however, was the opposite: the schmaltz is on the original and the grit is on the cover. I think I prefer the grit...
