Default Would you recommend...

...playing the u-boat(s) in this expansion to someone who is already enjoying SH3 + GWX? :hmm:

I mean to ask this in the most simple way.

Are there things I would enjoy more?

Things I would miss terribly?

Does it give the same feel?

Does it "deliver"?

Worth it?

I have no idea and don't follow website reviews too much.

Thanks

I would.

Since I got the addon, I have finally removed SH3 from my computer and freed up ALOT of space.

There are things you would enjoy more, and there are things you would miss. But overall, it's worth the upgrade IMO.

Best thing to do is buy it and try it out for yourself!

I have both on
Well I would but the uboat add on only covers the Indian Ocean so while you get to sail in the improved game engine tis not the cold rough Atlantic of SH3

Play both umm or all 3

To me, SH4 is still a work in progress. The Pacific game is really very good, modded to taste, while the U Boat game is still in its infancy. Give the modders a reasonable amout of time and the U Boat game will also be very good in this game.

Still have SH3 installed, and SH4 1.5. Also a 1.4 install still there as well. I can see myself eventually getting into the U-Boat add on ( once it's modded to full Atlantic ), but for now if I want U-Boats I'll stick with SH3.

SH4 up to this point and the foreseeable future, is about the PT for me.

Default After 1 cruise of SH4UBM

I can say that it delivers. But the Pacific experience is far, far from the fatalistic death spiral of the Atlantik. This is a South Seas vacation featuring tonnage galore. You will seldom fear for your life and T3 Tankers frolic in the warm seas for your benefit. There are goodies you are used to that aren't here yet. For instance, we are waiting for the OLC GUI to make its appearance.

U-Boats in the Pacific will never take the place of U-Boats in the Atlantik no matter how good the game. SH3 lives on and deserves hard drive real estate!

Well, ok, I'd have to agree with everyone here about missing out on the Atlantic U-boat campaign. I guess I just got so burned out on sailing around Great Britan, I didn't even think about missing that.

Other than that, I would pick SH4 1.5 over SH3 to spend my time with(which is why I removed SH3 in the first place)

I would have to say that it's worth getting Some may feel that this addon is just the Devs. throwing us a bone. I don't feel that way at all. The U boats in the Indian Ocean were a real, historic, unglamorous perhaps, undertaking. Granted, once our modders get finished with it, it will be much better! Is it as exciting and intense as the Atlantic? No. It's not the Atlantic. I applaud the Devs. for their effort!

Yeah, i agree. Despite great job by mods , i found PTO extremily easy after playing GWX for long time.In one patrol i can get 100+ tonnage, no probs, which i don't care about as much i would, since i can walk away without scratch 10 out of 10 times.

I think that issue is that IJN was awfull in anti-sub war IRL(unlike Brits and co in Atlantic) and unless you give them some major unrealistic advantages(which would ruin my interest), you are in for Carnival cruise.

I wonder how hard/easy would be playing with IJN subs, although it would be completely ahistorical.

Two phrases: Trigger Maru. Bungo Pete. Death. Yours.

Ok, so that's not two phrases. But you're still dead.

Tried both TMO and RFB(they are both very nicely done, btw) , along with RSRDC, and after 1-2 quick maneuvers would lose escorts(0n 100% realism).Sonar is helpfull, wast improvement over u-boats hydrophones, along with other goodies that are there.

And going to Bungo Straits is like going to English channel, why do it ? In '43 whole AO and Mediteranean are Bungo Straits anyways.

I don't preffer "playability" over history though, so TMO was not my cup of tea at all(not saying it's not good). If you have to add playability by sacrificing history(at least thats how i understood) that doesn't make it intriguiging for me.So i preffer RFB, just because of being 100% historical.

But , i still play PTO, when i need relaxation from being chased by DDs for (real time) hours in Atlantic or Mediteranean.

And , just fyi, i don't care is it U-boat or Fleetboat(or any other) that i am in, as long it gives me chance to sweat.

100% historical?

That's a chimera. As soon as you find it, it changes into a different animal. To be 100% historical you would be confined to simply replicating every single move of a submarine throughout its patrol, being subject to each single historical event that took place on that cruise. You would not be playing a game or running a simulation. You would be reading a book or watching a movie. Even they are unhistorical because they make assumptions. For instance, they impute what likely words were spoken by the captain of the sub. One mistake in a single word makes the book or movie unhistorical.

All simulation is for one reason: to ask "what if." "What if" didn't happen, so the mere act of asking the question violates the historical integrity you worship. The first "what if" is "What if I were there?" Well, you weren't. If you are, that is unhistorical and you have violated your prime directive before you touch a lever on the submarine.

Wars are not run by automatons. The historical missions, Japanese traffic, all human behavior during the war was done in reaction to something done by other participants. The war was a big giant nested feedback loop. For instance, and not picking on Lurker in particular, but he's tough so why not!, by saying, I'm gonna make every Japanese ship go where a Japanese ship went during the war: the same ship, the same time. No loops for me, no sir. EVERYTHING they do is going to be what they did during the war.

No, it won't be. The Japanese during the war were reacting to the actions of US forces (just one feedback loop in the nested mess). Now you are there. They won't react to you. In the real war they would have. Therefore, the game is unhistorical and you are playing Quake. OK, you aren't playing Quake, but what you are playing is unhistorical because historically, the Japanese would have reacted to your sub running amok in their shipping lanes, sinking unhistorical amounts of tonnage and you would have been treated to some special aircraft, some special escorts sent your way. Guess what? That ain't gonna happen! All traffic is "historical." Historical my left testicle!!!!!

The only way to make the game totally historical is to kill it: take every vestige of life from the game and turn it into a boring college lecture. That's not why anybody, including you, bought the game.

So don't hold your breath. No "historically perfect" game is going to appear because that animal is as mythical as the chimera. If it did appear you wouldn't buy it. If you did you'd return it because there would be no player inputs in the "game."
