Default Sea Hunter, a 132-foot-long trimaran completion of her first unmanned patrol

This kind of news gets more play over here in GT than in Sub and Naval Discussions (why I do not know) So I propose new news like this be started here and then moved over to:

The research arm of the U.S. Navy has successfully sailed an autonomous ship from San Diego to Hawaii and back with little human intervention. That's a huge accomplishment for the Navy, as well as for the contractor who supplied the brains for the vessel.

The Office of Naval Research said the Sea Hunter, a 132-foot-long trimaran designed by Leidos Holdings (NYSE:LDOS), completed the mission without a crew save for short boardings from an escort vessel to monitor electrical and propulsion systems. The voyage was part of a series of tests begun in 2016 and expected to extend through the rest of the year.

What I love about this, is that us here on SUBSIM got to play a part in designing the AI it uses. Anybody remember the ACTUV game?

I also Remember that I could not play it on my older Vista computer.

From the same article in post one: https://www.fool.com/investing/2019/...uge-miles.aspx

Quote:
Sea Hunter profile for as little as $20 million apiece and operate them for $15,000 to $20,000 per day. By comparison, a new Arleigh Burke-class destroyer costs $1.8 billion, and with its full crew costs $700,000 per day to operate.
At that price you could afford a thousand of these ships and design them to attack anyone that attacks them

IIRC, these ships are not intended to be weapons platforms, but just have the ability to lock onto a target and not let it go until other assets can be called in.

...or maybe they could make some Roboseavacs and clean up all the plastic so we can have straws.

This is just a prototype of the future of naval warfare ... an unmanned drone carrier could be next.
