Default Bugger me, it's Richard Burton!

Richard Burton says:

"Have you ever seen or met anyone famous, like wot I am? Did you just shrug your shoulders and let the moment pass, or (like that old lady in my movie, Battle Of Sutjeska) did you run up and paw them cravenly? I'd like to know, unless it was Kim Kardashian in which case don't bother..."

The Spy Who Came In From The Cold

Alec Leamas -
What the hell do you think spies are? Moral philosophers measuring everything they do against the word of God or Karl Marx? They're not! They're just a bunch of seedy, squalid bastards like me: little men, drunkards, queers, hen-pecked husbands, civil servants playing cowboys and Indians to brighten their rotten little lives. Do you think they sit like monks in a cell, balancing right against wrong?

Burton's best film ever.

Back when I was twelve my stepmother's uncle was head prop man for a show called Valentine's Day, with Tony Franciosa and Jack Soo (who would later be famous for Barney Miller). My dad and I got to watch one day's filming, which I really enjoyed when I watched that scene when the show aired later. At one point I went outside for some reason, and a grown-up was right behind me so I held the door for him. Mr Soo gave me a polite "Thank you." Of course I was thrilled.

I did get to meet X-15 pilot Scott Crossfield, which was also exciting.

Had a conversation with James B. Sikking, who was big on Hill Street Blues at the time.

Could not agree more. It's a fantastic, and realistic, spy story, and sticks very closely to the book.

Living here in Los Angeles, in particularly, Hollywood, I've seen or met quite a few celebrities and politicians, but I usually don't make a fuss over them. The only one I recall went a bit out of my way to talk to was Alan Hale, the Skipper on Gilligan's Island. He owned a restaurant in West Hollywood and I saw him standing outside its doors one night and I went over to say hello and shake his hand. He was very gracious and seemed to actually enjoy being greeted...

Steve, I saw Jack Soo a few times around Hollywood. He was a part owner of a Chinese restaurant on Hollywood Blvd. I once took my mother there and just as I was telling her there was very little chance of seeing a celebrity actually on Hollywood Blvd., in from the back of the restaurant came Jack Soo. He had a sheaf of papers in his hand and he sat down at a nearby table, took out a pen and began to do some calculations, so I assume they may have bee the restaurant's receipts. My mother went over to say hello and he was very nice to her...

Fast forward a few years. Jack Soo had been diagnosed with cancer and the news was all over the tabloids. I took my mother to a local supermarket. While I was loading the groceries into the car, my mother suddenly took off. I turned to see where she was going and noticed Jack Soo crossing the lot. My mother ran up to him and proceeded to say she had read about him in the National Enquirer and how sorry she was to hear about his cancer. She then proceed to tell him about some of the various treatments she had heard about on TV. I was very embarrassed about this, but Jack was very polite and patient with her and thanked her for her concern. He was a true gentleman and I was very sad when he passed a short time afterward...

Default Anne of the Thousand Days (1969)

My brother happened to be at Hampton Court Palace on a school trip when this movie was being made; he would've been thirteen years old. Bugger me if Anthony Quayle, no less, didn't come sidling up and beg a swig of water from his army canteen he used to carry around with him (it was a hot day).

Richard Burton says:

"I was in that film, and I didn't see your brother..."

Once shared a ciggie with Shane Warne after a county game in which he captained Hampshire against Durham.

I've met Jimmy Hill, the football commentator. It's true, his chin is as big in real life as it looks on the tv!

I'd draw up a list of notable people I've met in the past but very few here would believe me.

Sporting examples alone would include Pele, Ali, Keegan, Daglish, Souness, Shilton and beating the world darts champion taking out 69 in a two dart 19, bull finish.

Best if I don't name royal family members and politicians.
