Controling the sea lanes.
It looks obvious to me that for China the control of the east and South seas of China is a top military priority.
That's why in the later they are creating reefs based artificials islands with already one with a long airplane runway and another with a naval Harbour. With indeed the fact that, as ^mentioned, a very important part of the world's naval economics lanes go threw the China seas...
