Font smoothing problem

Every now and then when I exit a game the desktop font (infact all other windows applications) is corrupted and almost unreadable, not sure what the problem is but a guess would be font smoothing, I was going to show a picture but the funny thing is it appears ok when taking a snapshot, the desktop font looks stuffed but a snapshot of the fonts look ok, that's weird!!!
Anyone come across this problem and knows how to fix this, so far the only thing I can do when this happens is restart windows (XP Pro). Unfortunately I can't make it happen, just does it once or twice a week.
Thanks.

The resolution is the same, checked desktop\properties\settings, I'll try to explain further: Once I'd exited the game the windows fonts were stuffed, could hardly read, this effected desktop and all applications, I took a snapshot and saved it, rebooted system and the fonts are now fixed, took a snapshot and compared the 2 pictures, exactly identical! both fonts identical, image properties the same!! This is so weird, the only way to get a snapshot would be with a camera!!
