It's an HP Pavillion, I got it in 2012 when I was in AIT at Ft.Lee. I'm assuming it's windows 7, vanilla SH3 and GWX 3.0 ran like a dream, as did SH4, which I still have on it. SH5 ran slow unless I lowered the graphic settings.

"This application can be launched with a release version of Microsoft Windows 95 OSR2.1/98ME/NT4.0/2000/XP/ Server 2003 Only"

THen I have two options to click either "information" or "ok

Hi Dartlucky

I do not know that much about the technical side of computers.
To me it looks like from your error message it is looking for a compatibility mode?

Regarding the LSH3-2015 gpu situation this might be down to where a lot of systems have integrated graphics.

LSH3-2015 is a big mega mod, I have a 4gig gpu and I can go from 60 to 600 fps depending on what is happening.
Expanding the map right out really lowers the frame rate quite considerably.

I'm not worried about LSH running slow, I'm just trying to get my original SH3 running at this point. I did buy two separate copies, one is in a thick case, one is in a slim case. To the best of my knowledge, only the big case (original purchase) has a CD key, the slim one didn't. Are there different retail versions of SH3? Is it just the older, first run disks that have this issue

Hi Darthlucky

It is important when purchasing discs that you get a Starforce Free Version.

The dvd you are looking for will be showing ESS632.

The Starforce Free Version will be Black at the Bottom and White at the Top.

A typical File Version showing in Properties is 8.2.160.0

Product Version 1.4.0000

Date modified 18/08/2006

Do not be misled by the silver band at the top of the Dvd case that says Games in white letters which is irrelevant.

The Starforce Version will be Black at the Bottom and Silver at the Top.

These have a Product Version showing in Properties of 1.00.0000

This version does not have the latest patch and has copy write protection.

Hi Darthlucky

We will assume that your dvd is Starforce free.
When you load the dvd in the drive exit from the installer.
Go to your dvd drive number on the laptop and open it.
You should be able to see the install application.
Right click on it and see if it will give you the option to run as administrator.
Even if you cannot run it as administrator you can still run it from there.

IIRC you do not have to register or use a CD key.
I think a box comes up and you click on "never" IIRC.

Check that your program (x86) folder does not contain anything SH3.

Never load the game to the program (x86) folder as games are usually 32 bit programs they will always look for that folder to install in.

I am still confused as you can see why you have previously run SH3 and now you are having this difficulty.
I can see no logical reason why the basic SH3 installation will not work unless you still have some left overs somewhere on your laptop that have not been removed.

You could also try using the Windows Search function and enter some logical search words/names and see if it turns anything up.

Getting desperate now, running out of ideas.

Don't use the older DVD with CD key, it includes StarForce copy protection which is not compatible to Win7, 8 ,8.1, 10.

Use only the younger disk without CD key! There's no StarForce in it.
__________________________________________________ ________

If there's still a failed installation from the older DVD of SH3 on your computer do the folowing:

- delete completely the whole installation directory of SH3
- close all other applications
- run that tool as admin
- after the reboot install SH3 from the younger DVD [not into default installation folder!]

It looks like the issue is just the fact that I have the older DVD, hopefully I can find the newer one...else Jeff Bezos gets more of my money

When you say it will be black at the bottom and silver at the top for the StarForce version, do you mean the case or the DVD

I'm going to dig around my parents house, look for that second DVD that I'd bought, if not, like I said in my PM, I'll get a copy on amazon that has SH2&3 double cd. Thank you again for you offer. The community here is amazing, if only the fundraiser had gone on for one more day....didn't get paid till this morning

If you don't find it you don't absolutely need to buy another one.

Look here:

How to play Silent Hunter III without the DVD in the DVD Drive (Starforce free)
One hint: follow precisely what Uncle Neal wrote there! Particularly not to launch the game before all steps are done. Therefore you've to remove some checkmarks at the end of installations.

When you're done with that procedure burn the entire content of the SH3 installation folder to a blank DVD. You can use it as file backup and as a virgin base for further big mods.

Hi Darthlucky

The answer to your question > dvd
The case is irrelevant.

The double version you mention.
This sounds like the new Canadian Encore version sold from the U.S.A. containing both SHII and SHIII.

I believe there is a problem with this as my experience with it is that although it allows you to browse your system it will still only allow it to install in the program (x86) folder on the C drive, nowhere else.
When you try to load somewhere else or a different drive it comes up with an error code.
