I honestly can't be bothered to start cropping the photos from my compact...I simply point and shoot.

One day I'll get a DSLR to replace the Olympus OM10 35mm film SLR I've had stored in the cupboard for over 25 years

Just don't use flash i think...that's all.
You blind your camera with all those reflections,it makes photos look bad.
