Default 2 computers - 1 monitor, keyboard, and mouse

A relative of mine has two computers they are trying to network. They would like to be able to have the two computers but only have one monitor, keyboard, and mouse. One computer is a Dell that is a few years old and has Windows XP. The other is a Compaq that is about four months old and has Windows Vista. They want to control the XP machine with the Vista one. They want to be able to run all the programs and stuff. I know Windows has a remote access program, but am not sure if it is sufficient in this case. Is it even possible to do?

Google "KVM Switch"

There's hardware and software versions. Depends on what you want.

Yep - I concur - KVM switch. Hardware based is what you want.

Another good app if you have an extra laptop around - http://www.maxivista.com/

I have a setup at work where one computer is connected to the main company intranet and the other a closed 'machine network'. The two computers are not connected at all so both stay 'safe' from the possible infections of the other. It works GREAT. I can switch back and forth in a heartbeat using my keyboard. It is hardware switched.

Definately the best way to go.
