Default Jim Marshall, founder of Marshall amps, dies at 88

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...2D77.DTL&tsp=1

To those of us who grew up in he 60s and 70s, a Marshall amp was dream of all us guitarists. I remember the first Marshall stack I got to try: I was working in a bank and, during my breaks and luch, I would often cut acroos the alley behind the building and go to the music store. One day, I walked in to find they were offering a couple of Marshall stacks for sale and had them set up in a glass in room where you could try out instruments, etc. I plugged in a Gibson ES355 and hit a chord. The resultant roar from the amp took me completely by surprise and it caused the glass windows to vibrate to the point I thought they would shatter. I quickly turned down the amp and, when I looked up, I could see one of the clerks looking at me with a big smile and giving me a thumbs up...

The Marshall amp and Jim Marsahll are both legends who help create some of the other legends of the music world...

RIP, Jim Marshall and many thanks...

...

Marshall's success is a perfect example of being in the right place at the right time. He listened to what people were saying and supplied the product. Didn't hurt that some of those people were Pete Townsend and Eric Clapton. The Marshall amp is part of rock music history.

R.I.P. Jim.

I played in a metal band back in the 80's and had a 250w valve Marshall with 2 4x12 cabs which did a great job of permanently damaging my hearing. RIP Jim Marshall, you may have gone but your stacks will live on forever.

I wasn't paying attention to his name, but his amps are the stuff of legend. And they're stilll desirable today. Both our guitarists use 100-watt Marshall heads and half stacks for club work but have the other halves just in case we play outdoors. The rythm guitarist/songwriter recently got hold of an older tube head, and he has to be careful in the practice room so he doesn't burst eardrums.

Thank you Jim Marshall for what you gave the electric music world, and if you're not remembered for long your legacy will live forever.
