Default mod

There was a mod several years ago which had the Gato in SHIII with a Pacific campaign. Apparently, Ubisoft pulled the plug on it since they were developing SHIV.

I was hoping to just have the Balao with a German crew and everything, not as a Pacific Campaign thing.

Correct; in SH2.

However, there was a mod for SH3 that did this also, but it was never developed. I downloaded it and played it. The Pacific campaign started but no further development occurred.
When I have time I will search my files and see if I still have it.

Ok, im bored, feeling nostalgic, sick of working on SH4, and lost in thought. I've been muling something over in terms of design, and i need to revisit SH3 to see if my thought is correct. So i *might* try this.

The first pass would be just an exterior model with proper sensors and equipment, but using the type 9 interior. This Balao would quite literally take the place of the 9D2.

If that works out, the second pass , would be to attempt to convert the proper interior into SH3. (thats a metric butt ton of work)

If that proves to be popular, on the 3rd pass ill see about the Gato. (since it has the most upgradeable conning towers) This will literally take the place of the 9C.

edit: If i do this, i'll prototype it in stock first just to see if i can do it, and then do a gwx specific version later if ppl want it.

BUT......

I have ONE niggling question.


10 torpedo tubes in SH3. Is this possible? Is the game hardcoded to 6 tubes, and would adding more involve editing the menu.ini file in any way shape or form?

You mean the SH3 pacific mod by a modteam of combatplanes.ca, they modified a Type IX boat into a Gato class. The further development was stopped by Ubisoft because they started the development of SH4.

I gave it a quick whirl just to see if i could get the model to load in SH3. It doesn't. I get a CTD. I suspect it might be something in the sim file (peroxide variable?), the dat file (3D damage or unknown controller types), or both. Sorry to say, I really don't care enough to track it down.

Not really. I was put off by the fuzzy nature of SH3's appearance. It just doesn't look very good when your native monitor resolution is a lot higher then the games. I think id like to fondly remember the game as I played it on my CRT , and not as i saw it on my LCD last night. (That and i have an idea on another project )

edit: It does occur to me though, Dat files are not downward compatible. (in a drag an drop sort of way) Meaning, SH4 can read and understand everything from SH3. But sh4 adds new stuff, stuff that SH3 can't read or understand, hence the barfs to desktop.
