The HF sets generally used horizontal long-wire antennas strung from the conning tower to communicate with BdU so this might also represent a vertical whip antenna for short-range HF work.

Thanks, yeah, I don't think voice/ship to aircraft was available then but not sure myself. Bet it's your latter idea.
Have to be careful on the bridge during a storm with that thing around.
