Default Norwegian Frigate and oil tanker collision frigate sunk

After a successful operation trident juncture 18 exercise disaster has struck the Norwegian navy, one of its most advanced warships of the Fridtjof Nansen class the Helge Ingstadt.

The Nansen class are classified as multi role frigates based around the Spanish F100 type and primarily optimized for ASuW AAW operations being fitted with the Aegis warfare system, some 440ft long 55ft wide and displacing around 5,000 tons.

These vessels comprise the main arm of the Norwegian navy and the Helge Ingstadt is one of 5 vessels which cost $2.3bn USD each, this is a huge loss to a small navy, this is also one of the most advanced and capable warships in Europe.

From the reports i have been reading it appears the Helge Ingstadt was at anchor dead in the water, weather in terms of visibility was bad with heavy driving rain.
She was in contact with the MT Solar TS by VHF radio (the tapes have been made public) a 113,000DWT Crude oil tanker before the collision took place the master of the tanker is heard saying " Helge Ingstadt you must do something" and "we may have a collision then" the collision occurred on the Helge Ingstadt's aft starboard side likely in the engine and machinery area causing severe flooding to that area, its known the bow of the tanker has been damaged but remains afloat, the Helge Ingstadt was deliberately run aground.

At the moment we don't know what the situation is with the tankers crew its likely the ship will be detained pending inquiry.

Something similar has happened in 1994 with the HMNoMS Oslo when she sank under tow.

This morning i awoke to the news that sadly the Helge Ingstadt has now slipped down a steep embankment that she went aground on and has subsequently sunk becoming what they call a CTL (constructive total loss).
